  The DANEOPS Project
The DANEOPS project has been initiated to systematically search existing photographic plate archives for precovery images of known NEOs.
It is organized as a cooperation between Gerhard Hahn, DLR Institute of Space Sensor Technology and Planetary Exploration and Andreas Doppler and Arno Gnädig, from an amateur working group at the Archenhold Observatory.
Since November 1999 Matthias Busch and Reiner Stoss from the amateur group at the Starkenburg Observatory are participating with recovery observations.

The great bulk of this effort was provided by DANEOPS in the form of targeted searches with a 1.5-m reflector at Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.
Six NEOs were precovered on photographic archives, mostly by DANEOPS and by R.H. McNaught.
No identifications on pre-existing data or accidental recoveries were made during this lunation.

The very fact that we find some identifications implies that our algorithms are capable of finding nontrivial identifications which could escape the MPC scrutiny.
Another large fraction of the published identifications are credited to the so called DANEOPS consortium (A. Doppler, A. Gnädig, G. Hahn and others).
We understand that their methods belong to the attribution class, but it is not easy to compare the efficiency of the two algorithms; probably their good results also depend upon a very efficient data flow and a rather advanced automation.

Indeed, using the SkyMorph online search system, we found a single trail from the fast-moving object on an image taken by the NEAT-Palomar NEO survey on June 16, 2002.
After we notified him of the detection, Reiner Stoss of DANEOPS [http://earn.dlr.de/daneops/] immediately measured the precise position for us.
The new precovery data extended the arc of observations from 35 days to 114 days, dramatically improving our ability to determine the past and future paths of this object and to measure the acceleration of solar radiation pressure.

Currently the main emphasis is on recovery of NEOs and other asteroids and comets in need of further astrometric observations to improve and secure their orbits.
which is mainly concerned with searching plate archives for pre-discovery observations of NEOs, we perform recovery and/or confirmation observations based on ephemerides produced from DANEOPS predictions.

An asteroid discovered by LINEAR in January of 2000, 2000 BD (also written 2000 BD19) was soon after located by DANEOPS on Palomar plates from February 10, 1997.
This allowed a reasonably precise orbit determination, and as a result it was spotted again on February 27, 2001 and January 21, 2002.
