DAW Books is a science fiction and fantasy publisher, founded by Donald A. Wollheim following his departure from Ace Books in 1971.
Until July-1984 all DAW books were characterized by yellow spines and a prominent yellow cover box containing the company's logo as well as a chronological publication number.
Although it is now a member of the global giant Penguin Group, DAW itself remains closely held by its current publishers, Elizabeth R. Wollheim (Donald's daughter) and Sheila E. Gilbert.

Ballantine Books, founded in 1952 by Ian Ballantine, is a major American book publisher.
The first Ballantine Book was Cameron Hawley's Executive Suite, published in 1952 and filmed by Robert Wise as a 1954 MGM film.
A separate Canadian edition of the books was also published, with different front cover art work, though Tolkien still asked for (and received) permission to add a message to the back cover of the Canadian editions expressing his support for them.

I suppose that the book could make you feel like an outsider to some of the authors' worlds presented within, but I felt that almost all of the stories were easy to get a handle on and great fun to read.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of its founding, DAW books published two anthologies; one of new science fiction stories, and the other of new fantasy stories, all by celebrated authors (including Andre Norton, Tanith Lee, Larry Dixon, and many more).
This 30th Anniversary Daw Fantasy anthology provides strong stories that run the gamut of the genre from some of the more renowned writers to the future stars.

When I published my anthologies with DAW, I was surprised that there was no list of all DAW Books on-line, so I created this one.
Given that DAW ran DAW for 14 years and Elizabeth has run it for 21 years, maybe I should stop thinking of DAW's DAW as the model for what DAW is and start thinking of Elizabeth's DAW as the standard model.

I found this book to be entertaining and as with all of Mercedes books i was unable to put it down untill i had finished.
This book really gives you an insiders look on what it is like to become a herold of Valdemar and what the trainees go through as well as how they change and mature.
I thought that this was a good book to give fans a real insight into what the characters we love so much might of been like before they were chosen.

DAW 30th Anniversary: Fantasy is organized along the same principles (contributions from DAW authors in chronological order of first publication), has an appropriate fantasy cover but matches the science fiction volume in general design, and is of the same approximate length.
