Topic: DC Archive Editions

DC Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DC Comics (originally called Detective Comics, Inc. and later National Comics (1947) and then National Periodical Publications (1961)) is one of the largest American companies in comic book and related media publishing.
DC Comics should not be confused with British comic publisher D.C. Thomson.
DC's extended storylines in which Superman was killed and Batman was crippled, resulted in dramatically increased sales, but the increases were as temporary as the substitutes, and sales dropped off as industry sales went into a major slump.

DC should probably have made issues #1 and 2 free to any kid 16 or under, and used promotional tie-ins, discount coupons and/or video game co-op promotions to make an enormous “deal” out of this new push forward.
That DC (or parent company Warner Brothers) would allow Batman to deliberately and capriciously injure and perhaps (it is implied) kill police officers—just for fun, just to scare Dick Grayson, is utterly baffling.
DC did not market the line well, so everyone came away with different expectations and were duly disappointed when those expectations weren't met.

Superman: The Action Comics Archives volume 1 reprints only the Superman stories from Action Comics #1, and #7-20 (issues 2 thru 6 were reprinted in early issues of Superman).
I imagine the reason DC archived Superman in multiple series has much to do with the initial popularity of the character with his multiple appearances, plus the fact that many of Superman's first stories in "Action Comics" were reprinted in his the first issues of his own solo title.
Since I am largely up to date on the "Superman Archives" proper, which reprinted the solo series, going back and reading "The Action Comics Archives" is fun little treat, as one is reminded of how much the character changed in just his first decade.

Unfortunately, as one of the first editions in DC's Archive series it suffers from a number of production missteps that too often distract.

PULP CULTURE column for NOV. 28, 2002: DC Comics 'Archive Editions' are great gifts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
For more than a decade, DC Comics has reprinted its classic stories in handsome archival volumes, each well worth the nearly $50 price tag, which pays for the high restoration costs associated with reprinting comics first published as long ago as the late '30s and early '40s.
There is a reason DC calls its collection the "Archive Editions." Each volume preserves a few pages of comics history, which otherwise would turn yellow and brittle and eventually fade away.
A complete list of "Archive Editions" is available online at The DC Archive Edition Home Page, and you can order copies from any comic-book shop.

When is an Archive Not Archival?
But the Archives are printed at the new comic book size, forcing the art to be reduced to fit, and causing an awkward disparity of margin sizes.
In this aspect, DC’s old FAMOUS FIRST EDITION series of the Seventies was far preferable to me; Tabloid sized reprints of the entire comic book, cover to cover, including all backup features and advertisements, were put under a new heavy stock cover and sold for a buck.
The point is, DC (and Marvel, but I’m much more of a DC geek) is mostly missing the boat with its reprint editions.

These early adventures are, compared to modern comic books, crude and childish, but they reveal a sense of wonder and awe absent from many of today's comics.

Doom Patrol, as represented in the first volume of their Archives Edition, was an interesting attempt in the 1960s at DC to expand the notion of what makes a super-hero, along with Deadman, Challengers of the Unknown, Eclipso, and Metamorpho (most of these heroes created by Bob Haney, the author behind the Doom Patrol).
Their resemblance to the X-Men is obvious although DC was never able to create an environment where the oddball heroes fit in as well with Superman, Batman, et al, whereas the X-Men never seemed out of place in the Marvel universe.
But when DC announced that there was going to be a new Doom Patrol series coming I decided it was time to get to know these characters all over again.
