  Article 10: Switching Focus
Nor is it desperately encouraging to see from the DC Focus website that it's a "bold new take on reality-based comics" and, god help us, "gritty".
DC Focus is starting from scratch, which may perversely make it easier to attract the sort of audience it wants.
DC must be seeing more than that, given the amount of promotion DC Focus has received.

December 2004 Focus - DC Streets: Innovation Yields Results
According to Edward Sheldahl, project delivery team leader for FHWA's DC division office, the contract's big advantage is that it covers all of the assets of the District's portion of the NHS, which carries the bulk of DC traffic.
A major highlight of the program, adds Sheldahl, was the rehabilitation of two very heavily used tunnels in downtown DC that was undertaken as one of the initiative's first priorities.
Simon Rennie, DDOT project manager for DC Streets, notes that change can be difficult in public agencies, and welcomes the injection of innovation that this type of contract allows.

December 2001 Focus - Managing DC's Assets: Partnership Produces Better Tunnels
A year after the launch of the $70 million DC Streets initiative, Washington, DC, residents are reaping the benefits of this extensive rehabilitation and preservation undertaking.
The 5-year project is the largest transportation investment in DC DOT history and the first time that FHWA has teamed directly with a city government to preserve segments of the National Highway System.
Described by one DC official as a "deep, dark pit," the tunnel's list of ailments was a long one: high carbon monoxide (CO) levels; a destroyed CO and heat-detection system; nonfunctional communications, computer control, and variable message systems; and a majority of broken pumps and fans.

Sequential Tart: A Company of 'Firsts' - DC Comics (vol VII/iss 5/May 2004)
DC Comics prides itself on being a company of "firsts." New Fun Comics #1 was the first comic made up of fully original material.
DC also started licensing out their own property, and during this time many of its characters made their mark in live-action TV series, cartoons, and movies.
The relatively recent DC Focus line, which was made to allow different creators to experiment with different types of stories — has been critically well-received.

Ninth Art - Article 10: Somewhere Beyond DC
Of course, as a subsidiary of DC, WildStorm retains a degree of autonomy.
Anyway, DC seems to have a lacuna where comics set outside the DC Universe are either shoehorned into a brand where they don't really belong (like LOSERS and ASTRO CITY) or blithely dumped in the DC Universe section of the catalogue in complete disregard of their contents (like CAPER and FALLEN ANGEL).
DC would be better off turning 'Signature Series' - with a better name, obviously - into a general imprint for creator-driven books that fall outside any of the other imprints.

Dan DiDio: It's always been about what DC is. We're more than just superheroes; the fact that we had two other imprints that could siphon off some of those categories is good, but what we're trying to do is offer as many different types of product as possible by working with the best creators possible.
Going forward, though, there are DC characters being produced by editors based at Wildstorm, a Vertigo book coming out from an editor based in the DCU-any time you think we have a hard and fast rule as to what is produced and published where, we can give an example where there's a porous wall.
The DC Focus idea and brand was created because all four books have a similar theme, and it gave us a way to market and promote them a something that existed outside of the DCU.
