  America's One-Million Nonviolent Prisoners
Washington, DC: Coming just a week after the Justice Department announced that 1.8 million Americans were behind bars, a new report by the Justice Policy Institute has found that, for the first time, over one million nonviolent offenders were incarcerated in America in 1998.
Entitled America's One Million Nonviolent Prisoners, the JPI analysis of recent United States Justice Department data showed that over the past 20 years, the nonviolent prisoner population has increased at a rate much faster than the violent prisoner population, and that 77% of the people entering prisons and jails were sentenced for nonviolent offenses.
America's 1.2 million nonviolent prisoners is five times the number of people held in India's entire prison system, even though India is a country with roughly four times our population.

DC One Million - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DC One Million was a crossover event published by DC Comics in 1998.
It featured a vision of the DC Universe in the 853rd century (chosen because that is the century in which, assuming they maintain a regular publishing schedule, DC Comics will first publish an issue #1,000,000 of one of their current monthly titles.
Every series then being published by DC also put out a single issue numbered #1,000,000, which either showed its characters' involvement in the central plot or gave a glimpse of what its characters' descendants/successors would be doing in the 853rd century.

The new possible distant future for the DC Universe is also fun, along with the open timeline policy established by the book Kingdom.
Ressurrection Man, a book DC never should have come close to canceling, is given a nice bookend here as we see where his life will go in the far flung future, and the resolution of his tale with Vandal Savage.
This book, however, does not require you to be a scholar in these areas to attain a basic enjoyment of the work because it is not a quiet, scholarly book but rather the equivilant of a Tom Clancy-inspired action movie with shades of Sagan thrown in.

 DC Universe
The leading heroes of the DC Universe were originally (in the 1940s) known as the Justice Society of America and their exploits were published in All-Star Comics.
The DC Universe typically has its comic books set in fictional cities, such as the twin cities of Gotham City (based upon New York City) and Metropolis (based in part upon Toronto, though like Gotham, it also serves as a New York City analog in the comics).
Editors at DC came to consider the varied continuity of multiple Earths too difficult to keep track of, and feared that it was an obstacle to accessibility for new readers.

DC Comics' super-heroes star in a plethora of ongoing series, mini-series, specials, original graphic novels of various sizes, and collections every month.
This, then, acts as a guide for those new to DC's characters, for those who may be missing a classic of one of them, and for those who simply wish to argue what merits such concern.
One could even argue that DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy, a four-issue mini-series that also led into Infinite Crisis was a crossover, since it was followed by a number of issues featuring the returned Donna Troy's mission which connected to conclusion of The Rann-Thanagar War.

Solaris is a DC Comics supervillain, who exists in the distant future of the DC Universe.
Solaris was created in the 20th century section of the One Million storyline, as his abilities were required to counteract an organic computer virus his 853rd century self had sent back, concealed in the android Hourman.

DC Chronology Section 6 - Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The future of the DC Universe was once well-mapped terrain, but that map was torn apart by the Crisis on Infinite Earths—and DC’s future was hit harder than any other other aspect of its history by the events of Zero Hour, as well.
Originally, DC’s post-Crisis reality was said to have only a single unified timeline, from past to future; alternate futures may have been depicted as anomalies or potentialities (e.g., in Armageddon: 2001 <5-10.91>), but it was taken as inviolate that all those possibilities must ultimately collapse into a single “true” timeline.
This also appears provisionally true for the far future of DC One Million, and possibly the near future of Kingdom Come (or at least aspects thereof), but it remains to be firmly established.

For the first time since 1986, DC presented a Superman who has a renewed confidence and sense of optimism, who knows that he will succeed (and does succeed) because he fights on the side of right, and who inspires others to greatness by his actions.
In his brief run on The Flash, Morrison reminded us that, contrary to the claims made in the pages of Byrne's Man of Steel, Kal-El was in fact born on Krypton rather than on Earth.
In DC One Million and JLA, he has restored Superman's legend, his nobility, and his ultimate destiny.
