DCE uses Remote Procedure Call (RPC) as a model for implementing communications between a client and a server, in which the client side runs on one machine and makes a request for service, and the server side runs on another machine in the network and fulfills the service request.
DCE security service ensures that clients and servers are trusted by each other by supporting an authentication service in the open distributed environment.
DCE security protects the server from clients that are imposters and protects the clients from servers that are imposters, vs. security systems that only protect the intelligence at the host or server end.

 DCE Frequently Asked Questions
DCE is called "middleware" or "enabling technology." It is not intended to exist alone, but instead should be bundled into a vendor's operating system offering, or integrated in by a third-party vendor.
DCE 1.0.x releases had a limitation in this key mgmt call, in that it would not wake up until shortly before the key was due to expire (based on the expiration data that it obtained when the call was started or the last time through the loop after a change).
DCE and ONC both use the concept of the Remote Procedure Call, but the wire protocols that they use are not compatible.

 Critique of DCE
Proof that OSF DCE is complex: the documentation is enormous.
DCE RPC calls (functions with names beginning with rpc_) almost always return void (nothing), but have a pointer to an int passed in as a formal argument.
The implication is that despite it's enormous complexity, the DCE API is incomplete, and that since there are "secret" APIs, the "open" in OSF is confirmed as marketing spin talk.

 Introduction to DCE
DCE ACLs are associated with many DCE resources: files, entries in the directory service, and entries in the security service.
DCE security is integrated with RPC, so in some cases the programmer does not need to access security services directly.
DCE permits the use of public keys as part of the public key authentication protocol that works via public and private key pairs.

Comparing DCE and CORBA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
A varying array in DCE is an array of fixed size, of which only part is passed between client and server; however, the entire array is allocated at the server, which may return more array elements than were passed to it.
DCE pipes permit very large parameter values to be passed in a series of smaller blocks so that data transmission and processing may be pipelined.
DCE supports contexts, which are a mechanism for maintaining server state during a series of logically related requests from a single client.

DCE also supports a junction into the security service namespace, but there is no alias for this junction.
DCE itself is made up of components that, like the applications that use them, are distributed client/server applications.

 DCE at Mercury Communications
DCE is based upon a simple idea - the ability to distribute applications and services seamlessly across disparate platforms - but it is not yet quite so simple to use for everyday developers.
The DCE lab within Mercury had a mixture of bought and borrowed equipment (special thanks to IBM for their RS/6000 loan and Oracle for the loan of the Procedural Gateway software) and was staffed by people who were determined that a proof of concept would succeed.
Having read all the papers (including IBM white papers distributed at the last DCE SIG) we were fairly confident that this wouldn't be a problem but we didn't know for sure until we built our first system and tested it on the Mercury network.

 NAS DCE/DFS Client Administration Guide
It is possible for a DCE client to be working properly without a cdsclerk running on the system, since they are started and stopped as needed.
The portion of the kernel responsible for handling pathname resolution and file access in DFS space is called the Cache Manager (as usual in DCE/DFS land, the name is not a very good indication of the true function: it does manage the DFS client-side cache, but it does a lot of other things as well).
The only known way to correct the problem is to shut down and restart all of the DCE and DFS daemons (all of those that can be shut down without rebooting the machine).
