DCI and DCA corps are outgrowths - or groups which have "evolved from" - historic drum and bugle corps.
Classic drum and bugle corps advocates maintain that DCI and DCA are NOT drum and bugle corps per se; instead, they are a form of marching brass bands who exploit the history and cachet of drum and bugle corps for monetary, marketing and political purposes.

 DCA History
The primary function of DCA is to provide an organization of senior drum and bugle corps with rules and regulations, which provide for continuous progress and growth for senior corps.
With DCA taking control of the rules that corps are judged by, it has been critical that DCA find the best possible judging coordinators to advise on the appropriate judging system for senior corps, recruit and educate experienced, qualified judges and administer the entire judging program.
Not to be forgotten, the current DCA corps and their directors have the difficult task of protecting our heritage and maintaining DCA in its proper place of leadership in the activity.

Drumcorps FAQ 6/6 DCA - senior corps info
This was the start of the Drum Corps Associates a.k.a DCA and it continued the legacy created by the V.F.W. which discontinued its senior championship after 1962.
As the class name implies, these corps march in parades or perform at "standstills." Although many drum corps nuts do not consider these units as part of the continuum, they do provide an alternative for people who want to be part of drum corps, but cannot afford the time the field (DCA) units demand.
Most parade corps will not travel more than 2 hours from their HQ so it is easy to pack up the family and drag them to the various parades.
