From technical point of view DCOP is a interprocess communication protocol operating over sockets.
This is because DCOP communicates with process and not with application.
You probably won't use it for actual DCOP calls (except for testing) as it does not really make much sense to use GUI application to send signals to tell other GUI application to do something, you could have done directly inside that application.

 Desktop Communication Protocol (DCOP)
DCOP provides inspection functions so that it is possible to browse DCOP interfaces in order to find out which interfaces are registered and which functions they provide.
DCOP intentionally doesn't provide network transparent communication because this isn't required in normal desktop scenarios and would add an additional level of complexity as well as imposing a new class of security problems which don't need to be handled if network access is disabled.
This way the DCOP call appears as normal type-safe function call to the calling application and the DCOP communication and the fact that the call actually is a remote function call becomes completely transparent to the applications using DCOP.

 Why aRts isn't using DCOP
DCOP doesn't care about types at all, so this problem would be left to the programmer - like: writing C++ classes for the types, and make sure they can serialize properly (for instance: support the Qt streaming operator).
DCOP objects don't expose their relationships, inheritance hierarchies, etc. - if you were to write an object browser which shows you "what attributes has this object got", you'd fail.
But remember: DCOP was not so much intended to be an object model (as Qt already has one with moc and similar), nor to be something like CORBA, but to supply inter-application communication.

DCOP calls are used to set the wallpaper image and its position as well as to enable or disable desktop icons:

 DCOP: Desktop COmmunications Protocol
DCOP is built on top of the Inter Client Exchange (ICE) protocol, which comes standard as a part of X11R6 and later.
Currently the only real way to receive data from DCOP is to multiply inherit from the normal class that you are inheriting (usually some sort of QWidget subclass or QObject) as well as the DCOPObject class.
DCOP signals are very similair to Qt signals, there are some differences though.

 Connect KDE applications using DCOP
DCOP comprises a single server (dcopserver, which is started automatically when KDE starts) and any number of clients (DCOP-enabled applications).
DCOP clients can send messages to each other (via the server) to request information, ask for functions to be performed, and so on.
For clarity, from this point onwards, dcop in lower-case refers to the command-line utility, and DCOP in upper-case refers to the DCOP architecture in general.

In this regard, DCOP is similar to Microsoft's OLE Automation: it provides a simple way for developers to provide access to the functions available in an application.
This enables a range of applications, such as the DCOP browser, or the DCOP to XMLRPC daemon; but the one I'm going to look at is 'dcop', which allows shell access to DCOP.

DCOP is just a thin layer on top that handles the marshaling of data and makes sure all communication streams reach their destination.
You can imagine DCOP as a traffic cop who stands in the middle of a road crossing and directs the cars into their lanes, so that everyone reaches their destination, no accidents occur and no passengers end up in the wrong cars.
DCOP is used in KDE to unify the different communication means, like X atoms for communication between the control center and the application or TCP/IP sockets.

DCOP is KDE's acronym for it's "Desktop Communications-Oriented Protocol" - basically a lightweight and simple mechanism for inter-process communications (IPC).
DCOP allows two running applications to exchange messages or other information or exercise control over each other.
Accessing a DCOP method in another application requires 3 pieces of information: the name of the application to be accessed, the name of the DCOP object which holds the method to be called, and the name of the method itself.

The key feature of DCOP that makes it a viable choice for Kontact's inter-component communication is that it is also able to make in-process calls and thus minimizes the overhead for communication inside the one-process Kontact component assembly.
DCOP is not limited to communication between applications.
This makes it possible to hide parts of the DCOP interfaces, so that they can be used for inter-component communication, but are not available to tools like dcop and kdcop which rely on the interface inspection capabilities of DCOP.
