		The first Ingraham (DD-111) was launched in 1917 as a Destroyer, but her career was short-lived.
		The DD-694 was the third Ingraham, our ship did her part in WWII amd earned the Navy Unit Citation for actions off Okinawa and four Battle Stars for her service.
		The Ingraham was decommisioned in 1971 and transfered to the Greek Navy.

		Captain Ingraham served as Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrographer of the Navy from 1856 until 1860.

		He assumed command of Ingraham 19 July 1941 and with the outbreak of World War II commenced escort duty for convoys sailing from New York and Halifax to the British Isles.
		Ingraham, while investigating the collision of destroyer Buck with a merchant vessel, was rammed by fleet oiler Chemung in dense fog off Nova Scotia, 22 August 1942.
		The force of the collision exploded Ingraham, killing Commander Haynsworth and all but ten men and one officer.

	FFG 61 Ingraham
		USS INGRAHAM's mission is to escort and protect convoys, underway replenishment groups, amphibious landing groups, and carrier battle groups.
		The second INGRAHAM (DD 444) was commissioned on 17 July 1941, and served as a convoy escort between the United States and the United Kingdom.
		The third INGRAHAM (DD 694) was commissioned on 16 January 1944, and had a long distinguished career, earning battle stars and awards for its efforts at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Lingayen Gulf.

		Necessity was again the mother of invention--the Navy needed a ship able to destroy the deadly steam-powered torpedo boats which, at the beginning of the 20th century, posed a major threat to their much larger contemporaries in the surface navies of the world.
		The Navy ordered 111 "four-stack" destroyers of the Wickes class and 156 ships of the Clemson class to protect its convoys from German U-boats.
		The destroyer USS Fletcher (DD 445), commissioned in June 1942, displaced 2,700 tons when combat-loaded, and was fitted with a four-boiler propulsion plant that developed 60,000 shaft horsepower and delivered 36.5 knots.
