Arriving Boston Navy Yard 7 September 1940, Haraden was 1 of the 50 over-age destroyers to be sent to the United Kingdom in exchange for bases.

HMCS Columbia (ex-USS Haradan, DD- 183), Columbia manned by the RCN, served locally at Halifax, NS, until January 1941 when she came to Devonport for a brief refit thereafter joining 4th Escort Group until mid-1941.
On the formation of the Newfoundland Escort Command, Columbia's low radius and Canadian naturally led to her return to Canadian waterrs, and she was thereafter based at Halifax, NS.

Naval authorities last week reported the loss of two destroyers with total casualties of 244, of which 183 were suffered by the Twiggs personnel in a surprise attack on June 16 that blew off the ship’s bow.
Twiggs next rendezvoused with Haraden (DD-585) and Halligan (DD-584) for escort duty among the Palau Islands.
She was then detached from the convoy to guide Haraden, which had lost communications and radar in the engagement, until the battered vessel made visual contact with a tow convoy off Silino Island.
