USS Southard (DMS-10 ex-DD-207) — Navy Unit Commendation
Although lightly armed and highly vulnerable, the U.S.S. SOUTHARD participated in the initial amphibious assaults against Guadalcanal, Russell Islands and Empress Augusta Bay, braving concentrated enemy shore battery fire, major and minor strafing and bombing, and torpedo air attacks to complete minesweeping, fire support, anti-submarine and antiaircraft screen missions.
Constantly vigilant and ready for battle, she fought her guns valiantly against hostile planes, ships and shore guns, sinking a Japanese submarine by depth-charge attack and gunfire on November 10, 1942, and inflicting serious damage on vital enemy units; she transported troops, ammunition and supplies, conducted navigational reconnaissance missions and escorted convoys.

In addition, two studies from independent laboratories have suggested a reduction in tissue in the left superior temporal gyrus (Barta et al., 1990; Shenton et al., 1992), confirming Southard's anecdotal description (1910; 1915) of a "withering away" of the left superior temporal gyrus in schizophrenia.
Historically, we note that Southard's work (1910; 1915) had suggested that schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations were likely to have tissue reduction in left STG.
Our findings are also in accord with those Haglund and coworkers (1992): stimulation of left posterior STG in seizure disorder patients undergoing neurosurgery led to disordered and jumbled thoughts Finally, we note the relative specificity of our MR findings, since they were not accompanied by reductions in overall gray matter, white matter, or CSF.
