Bruce was launched 20 May 1920 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, San Francisco, California, sponsored by Mrs.
Annie Bruce, widow of Lieutenant Bruce, and commissioned 29 September 1920, Lieutenant Commander G. Reeves, Jr., in command.
Bruce operated out of San Diego, California during her first year of service on engineering, gunnery, and torpedo exercises, and maneuvered with Squadron 5, Pacific Fleet.

 USS Porter Commissioned in Port Canaveral Ceremonies
The USNS Bruce C. Heezen (T-AGS 64), the last of five Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ships built by Halter Marine, will be operated by the Military Sealift Command for the oceanographer of the Navy.
The new AGS was named by a group of fifth-grade students from Oak Lawn Elementary School in Cranston, R.I., whose entry won a nationwide competition--unique in naval history--sponsored by the Navy and the Navy League.
The Navy has decided to repair the damaged Spruance-class destroyer (DD) USS Arthur W. Radford, which suffered severe damage to her bow during a 4 February collision with a Saudi Arabian container ship off the Virginia Capes.

Sal Buscema was a long-time penciler on Spectacular Spider-Man. He drew some DD issues and also helped Cary Nord with layouts during Nord's stint on the title.
He inked these issues of DD back in 1995 and moved to LA in 1996 to pursue a career in animation.

Fifty-six ships with Yarrow boilers were broken up in 1930—31.
Three were expended as targets and two others, Preston (DD 327) and Bruce (DD 329), were expended in tests to determine how much strain their hulls could take.
Results these tests were applied in designing the Farragut class of 1932, the Navy’s first destroyers with longitudinal framing.
