Preble, launched in 1839, was a sloop that fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and visited Japan under the command of James Glynn.
Preble (DLG-15/DDG-46), launched in 1959, refitted and recomissioned 1969-70, re-designated USS PREBLE (DDG-46) 1975, decommissioned 1991, was a Farragut-class guided missile destroyer which saw action in the Vietnam War off and on between 1965 and 1973.

Relieved in September 1804, Commodore Preble returned to the United States in February 1805 and became engaged in shipbuilding activities at Portland, Maine, where he died 25 August 1807.
