  USS Mugford (DD-389) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Mugford (DD-389), a Bagley-class destroyer, was the 2nd ship of the United States Navy to be named for James Mugford, who commanded the schooner Franklin in the Continental Navy, serving through 1775.
On 7 August Mugford was on patrol off Lunga Point, Guadalcanal, when a large Japanese airstrike came in; three near misses and one bomb hit couldn’t prevent Mugford from downing two of her attackers, but she suffered eight killed, 17 wounded, and 10 missing.
Mugford returned to Pearl Harbor 10 May for training in preparation for the Marianas operation, for which she staged at Majuro.

In early August 1942, Mugford was part of the invasion force during the Guadalcanal landings.
Mugford returned to the war zone in March 1945 and spent the rest of World War II patrolling the area between Saipan and Ulithi.

MUGFORD remained in Hawaiian water for the first several months of the war to protect the indispensable islands against a second Japanese strike, or an invasion.
MUGFORD later was instrumental in rescuing four hundred survivors from two American cruisers lost in the battle of Savo Island.
MUGFORD would later serve with the occupation forces in Japan at the end of the war, before becoming a target in the Bikini atomic bomb tests.

Securing a commission in haste as a privateer commanding schooner Franklin in Capt. John Manley’s squadron off Boston, Mugford Mugford captured the brig Hope.with 75 tons of vitally needed powder and ran her into Boston in open view of the British fleet, 17 May 1776.
Mugford was killed when Franklin was attacked by small boats intent on her capture.

With the Leyte invasion now underway, TG 38.4, with Mugford, sped to meet the threat posed by major Japanese fleet movements, and on 24 October, planes from the force hit the Japanese center force in the Mindanao Sea, then headed north on receiving reports of a Japanese carrier off northern Luzon.
Returning to the western Pacific in mid-March, Mugford served as radar picket and on antisubmarine patrol between Ulithi and Saipan until the close of the war.

She served in TG 55.7 repatriating Allied prisoners of war from Japan to Okinawa early in September, then screened carriers providing air support for the occupation of the Nagasaki-Sasebo area.

WALTER BENJAMIN COBB was born 18 Sept. 1920 at Grays, KY and enlisted in the Navy on 17 Nov.1937, giving the Navy a birth date of 8 Sept. 1919 and joined without his parents consent.
After surviving Pearl Harbor, Walter was assigned to he destroyer MUGFORD (DD- 389).

After the first charge failed to sink it, a second charge was placed and detonated sending the LCT to the bottom of the lagoon.
On July 31, after a safety monitor arrived on board from the technical support ship USS Haven APH-112, Current departed for the Mugford once again and moored alongside for three hours and nine minutes, attempting to wash it down with water from the forward and the auxiliary monitors.

 Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN
In August 1938 - early in his sixteenth year of commissioned service - he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and in June 1939 took command of USS MUGFORD (DD-389), sister ship to CRAVEN.
During his tour, MUGFORD excelled in gunnery and participated in the development of high speed night gunnery and torpedo attack tactics.
After little more than a year in command, Burke was relieved and reassigned to the Naval Gun Factory in Washington, D.C. and was there when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
