  USS Fitch (DD-462) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fitch returned to Boston 3 December 1943 to resume coastal and Caribbean escort duty and to take part in hunter-killer operations in the western Atlantic until 25 April 1944, when she got underway from Norfolk for Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Fitch sortied from Taranto, Italy, 11 August 1944 for the invasion of Southern France on 15 August, during which she spotted the fire of battleship Texas (BB-35) as well as firing in the prelanding bombardment.
Fitch began sweeping the entrance to Tokyo Bay 28 August, and was present for the surrender ceremonies on 2 September.

Sailing 2 September 1943 to escort a convoy to Londonderry, N.I., Fitch continued to Thruso Bay, where on 20 September she embarked Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox and Admiral Harold R. Stark for transportation to Scapa Flow.

LeRoy Fitch, born 1 October 1836 in Logansport, Inc., was a member of the Naval Academy class of 1856, and served with great distinction in the Civil War and afterward.
She was reclassified DMS-25 on 15 November 1944, and again classified DD 462 on 16 July 1955.
Fitch's first mission, between 1 July 1942 and 6 August, was to escort Ranger (CV-4) to a point off the Gold Coast, where the carrier flew off Army planes for the base at Accra.

In the great buildup for the Normandy invasion, Fitch escorted single ships and convoys between Belfast and Plymouth, England, and took part in training exercises until 5 June, when she sailed from Plymouth for the assault.

On the morning of September 4, 1941, destroyer USS Greer (DD 145) was enroute from Newfoundland to Iceland when she picked up sonar contact with a German sub.
At Utah Beach, destroyers Fitch (DD 462), Corry (DD 463) and Hobson (DD 464) were the first ships of the invasion force to shell the shore.

 USS Hobson (DD-464) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Assigned to Rear Admiral Moon's Utah Beach Assault Group, Hobson arrived off Normandy with other ships of the bombardment group at 0140 6 June, and blazed away at German shore batteries.
During the early hours Corry (DD-463) struck a mine and sank, after which Hobson and Fitch (DD-462) fired at German shore positions while simultaneously rescuing survivors from the water.
Hobson continued to lend powerful fire support until returning to Plymouth later that afternoon.

Within minutes, she had broken amidships and her main deck was under 2 feet of water.
The order was given to abandon ship, and her survivors were in the water some 2 hours under constant shelling until rescued by Fitch (DD-462), Hobson (DD-464), Butler (DD-636), and PT-199.
Of her crew, 6 were dead, 16 missing, and 33 injured.

It bears a three-cent, green, Iowa Jima Memorial stamp and was postmarked on the ship, 11 Jun. 1947.
The U.S.S. Fitch was named for Commander LeRoy Fitch (1835-1875), No. 4008, who, during the Civil War, commanded a group of six small converted steamers, called "tinclads" on the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Ohio Rivers.
With this fleet, he contributed substantially to the pursuit and defeat of the rebel general, John Hunt Morgan.

The Fitch claimed “first shot fired at Normandy” by opening fire with her 5-inch guns at 0535.
On the Fitch, Quartermaster Third Class Robert E. Powell was at his battle station—“sky lookout.” He saw Germans firing small arms at the ships.
At least ten of the men who got off the sinking ship died of what Corry survivors call “enemy gunfire.” A torpedoman, hurled into the sea by the explosion, was never seen again.

D-Day was described by historian Stephen Ambrose as the climactic battle of World War II.
The USS Corry and the USS Fitch (DD-462) were the first two ships to fire on German-occupied France in the Normandy invasion.
Less than one mile from the Normandy shore, the Corry was one of five frontline destroyers that bombarded Utah Beach in support of invading troops on D-Day.

The DDs that would be at sea would be on escort duty, or an occasional offensive sweep but that was more often done by MTB or MGB.
When the actual invasion fleet sailed it had to have significant escort of anti-E Boat and antiaircraft protections, all were preceded by a flotilla of minesweepers to open the lanes to the Invasion Beaches.
While awaiting invasion duties most DD flotillas would be based outside of normal German Bomber range, possibly in Northern Ireland if not on convoy duty.

In the early morning hours of Nov 8th ("D" DAY), we, along with SWANSON, LUDLOW and MURPHY, took  position 1000 yards South of the leading transports.
  2 French DD's were beached outside the harbor-one was the "Cassard Class" and the other the "Tigre Class."  The cruiser, PRIMAUGET, who we fought earlier, was badly hit and anchored inside the outer breakwater.
  However one DD of the "Magador Class" was badly hit.
