  USS Smalley (DD-565) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smalley was laid down on 14 February 1943 by the Seattle Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, Wash. ; launched on 27 October 1943, sponsored by Miss Lina A. Mayo; and commissioned on 31 March 1944, Commander P. Horn in command.
Smalley spent all of 1952 on additional training coupled with maintenance and calibration of equipment; and, after a yard period in Boston in the spring of 1953, she sailed on 19 May for Korea.
Then, in 1957, Smalley left Newport on what was to be her last operational assignment: a cruise with the Mideast Force showing the flag in ports along the eastern coast of Africa and along the shores of the Persian Gulf.

 Anthony A. Smalley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smalley, born in Massachusetts in 1836, was commissioned Acting Master on 27 March 1862 for service during the Civil War; but he subsequently became ill and his appointment was revoked on 1 September 1863.
He served in the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron on board Pequot, and distinguished himself during the Union capture of Fort Fisher which guarded the sea approach to Wilmington, N.C. In the attack, Smalley was in command of an 18-man detachment from the Pequot which was responsible for digging trenches for the assault on the fort.
After the end of the Civil War, Smalley was honorably discharged from the Navy on 3 August 1865.

After the Okinawa Campaign and a rest in Leyte, the SMALLEY was assigned to the fast carrier task force of Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet and participated in the repeated attacks against the Japanese home islands of Honshu and Hokkaido from 1 July to the end of the war.
The SMALLEY was brought back to active duty on 3 July 1951 with the outbreak of the Korean War.
The SMALLEY was assigned to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet until struck from the navy’s list on 1 April 1965 and sold to the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation in January 1966.

USS Smalley, a 2050-ton Fletcher class destroyer built at Seattle, Washington, was commissioned in March 1944.
Her first wartime operation was a brief escort mission to Hawaii in June-July 1944, followed by deployment to the Aleutians area.
Smalley was sent to the Central Pacific in May 1945, screened USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) during a strike in the Marshalls, then moved further west to support operations from Okinawa to the Bonins.

On the evening of 5 June, while on RP-11 in company with Cassin Young (DD-793) and Smalley (DD-565), Van Valkenburgh came under a concentrated torpedo attack.
Two days later, however, the torpedoing of Pennsylvania (BB-38) brought home the fact that war was still very much "on." It was not until after 15 August that the signal "cease present operations" could be hoisted, indicating that the war was over at last.
For the week that followed, the group operated off the coast of Kyushu, southwest of Nagasaki, Japan, while aircraft from the carriers patrolled the island and coast and assisted in locating mines in the clearance operations paving the way for entry into the harbor at Nagasaki.

SMALLEY (DD‑565) and later on the Staff of Commander Amphibious Group FOUR in Norfolk, Virginia from 1954 to 1956, Commander ETCHISON attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, receiving a B.S Degree in Electrical Engineering.
CDR ETCHISON reported to the Naval Support Activity, DaNang, RVN where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Security Intelligence and Officer in Charge, Naval Support Activity Detachment Tan My Hue.
Commander ETCHISON assumed command of the USS JOHN W WEEKS (DD 701) on 11 November 1968 to 1970.

After stops at Balboa, Panama Canal Zone; San Diego; and Midway Island the COTTEN arrived in Japan and tied up at Yokosuka in Tokyo Bay for seven days.
On 29 June 1953 the COTTEN, along with the destroyers Daly DD-519 and Smalley DD-565, departed to join TF-77 in Korean waters.
For several days the destroyers provided plane guard duty for the carriers making air raids on Korean soil.
