 Claxton history 1
DD 571's first commanding officer was Cmdr. Herald F. Stout, born 1903 in Dover Ohio.
There she was with the battleships ALABAMA and SOUTH DAKOTA, the cruisers AUGUSTA and TUSCALOOSA along with other DD's; standing on alert waiting for a possible sortie of the German BB Tirpitz from Norway.
DD division 45 made a radar controlled torpedo run and fired 25 torps, but the Japs spotted our cruisers and made a turn away and they all missed.

 Rear Admiral Stout - Biography
In June 1932, he was transferred to the destroyer USS HATFIELD (DD 231) to serve as Torpedo Officer and First Lieutenant until April 1933.
In June 1936, he was ordered to duty afloat as the Executive Officer and Navigator of the destroyer USS ELLIOT (DD 146) for three years, returning to the Naval Academy in 1939 to again serve as an instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Physics.
In September 1942, Commander Stout became Commissioning Commanding Officer of the destroyer USS CLAXTON (DD 571), which operated with Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-THREE ("Little Beaver" Squadron) in the Solomons.

 Claxton DD-571
In the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay on the night of 1-2 November 1943, Claxton, with four cruisers and seven other destroyers, fired her torpedoes in an attack which turned back a Japanese force of four cruisers and six destroyers sailing to attack transports off Bougainville, sinking two and damaging four of the enemy ships.
Claxton towed Foote (DD 511), one of five American ships injured that night, into Purvis Bay, arriving 4 November.
On 25 November 1943, off Cape St. George, New Ireland, Claxton and four other destroyers intercepted a force of five Japanese destroyers, as the enemy ships sailed to evacuate aviation troops to Rabaul.

Ships and units of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Battle Group departed their home ports and bases in early November 1998.
The Carl Vinson Battle Group included USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and USS Oldendorf (DD 972) from DESRON 23, and USS McClusky (FFG 41) from Destroyer Squadron 1.
DD 966 Hewitt will de-commission in July 2001, and be replaced by DDG 85 McCampbell which comissions in August 2001.

 TORCH-- THE INVASION OF FRENCH NORTH AFRICA and SICILY
In the early morning hours of Nov 8th ("D" DAY), we, along with SWANSON, LUDLOW and MURPHY, took  position 1000 yards South of the leading transports.
  2 French DD's were beached outside the harbor-one was the "Cassard Class" and the other the "Tigre Class."  The cruiser, PRIMAUGET, who we fought earlier, was badly hit and anchored inside the outer breakwater.
  However one DD of the "Magador Class" was badly hit.

USS STOUT is the sixth ARLEIGH BURKE class guided missile destroyer and the first U.S. Navy ship named in honor of Rear Admiral Herald F. Stout, U.S. Navy (1903-1987), who was awarded two Navy Crosses for heroism while in command of the destroyer USS CLAXTON (DD 571) during World War Two.
Propulsion system: four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbine engines
