In March 1943 Claxton patrolled briefly in Casco Bay Maine, awaiting the possible sortie of German battleship Von Tirpitz from Norwegian waters.
In the struggle for the Solomons, Claxton and her squadron patrolled to intercept enemy shipping, protected the passage of American troops and shipping, bombarded enemy bases, covered landings, and engaged Japanese surface and air forces.
Repairs at Tacloban and Manus prepared Claxton for her return to action on fire support, patrol, and escort duty in the Lingayen Gulf landings from 9 to 18 January 1945.

The first CLAXTON was DD 140 built and commissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard in 1919.
The CLAXTON was there to refuel and provision and to await the makeup of a convoy.

After training at Nouméa and Espiritu Santo from 12 June 1943, Claxton covered the landings at Rendova between 27 June and 25 July, then joined Destroyer Squadron 23 for a period of brilliantly executed operations which were recognized with the Presidential Unit Citation.
In the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay on the night of 1–2 November 1943, Claxton, with four cruisers and seven other destroyers, fired her torpedoes in an attack which turned back a Japanese force of four cruisers and six destroyers sailing to attack transports off Bougainville, sinking two and damaging four of the enemy ships.
Claxton [sic] towed Foote (DD-511), one of five American ships injured that night, into Purvis Bay, arriving 4 November.

 USS Claxton (DD-571), Fletcher-class destroyer in World War II
Claxton completed her mission with her three forward guns, but returned via Purvis Bay to the west coast, where her stern was replaced.
Claxton was flagship of division “X-ray” at the Battle of Surigao Strait—Capt. Hubbard was the officer in tactical command of the division, which consisted of DesRon 23’s Aulick plus Cony, Sigourney, Thorn and Welles.
A week later, on 1 November, Claxton was hit in one of the first deliberate suicide plane attacks of the war by a Japanese plane that exploded in the water to starboard, killing five and wounding 23.

In June 1932, he was transferred to the destroyer USS HATFIELD (DD 231) to serve as Torpedo Officer and First Lieutenant until April 1933.
In June 1936, he was ordered to duty afloat as the Executive Officer and Navigator of the destroyer USS ELLIOT (DD 146) for three years, returning to the Naval Academy in 1939 to again serve as an instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Physics.
By his extreme valor and inspiring leadership, he evoked the indomitable fighting spirit which enabled the gallant officers and men under his command to contribute materially to the crushing defeat imposed on the enemy in the sinking of four ships and the serious damaging of two others.

Thomas Claxton, born in Baltimore, Md., entered the Navy as a midshipman 17 December 1810.
He was mortally wounded after gallant service in the Battle of Lake Erie 10 September 1813, dying at Erie, Pa., 17 October 1813.
Afterwards, Claxton screened Thatcher (DD-514) as she towed the Foote (DD-511), one of five American ships injured that night, into Purvis Bay, arriving 4 November.

One of the things that were extremely important to us was to tour our guest through the Orange Heritage House Museum, which was actually the initial spark that generated the fire that was ignited to get a ship here in Orange.
This reunion was originally planned to honor all the survivors and ex-sailors of the first twelve ships built here in Orange, but the planning group was unable to locate the surviving members of any but the first four ships built in Orange.
Those ships were: USS Harrison DD 573, USS John Rodgers DD 574, USS McKee DD 575, USS Murray DD 576, USS Sproston DD 577, USS Wikes DD 578, USS William D Porter DD 579, and USS Young DD 580.
