The second Coghlan (DD-606) was launched 12 February wary 1942 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co., Inc., San Francisco, Calif.; sponsored by Mrs.
Coghlan sailed from San Francisco 22 September 1942 for Pearl Harbor and Kodiak, Alaska, arriving 13 October for convoy and patrol duty.
Coghlan arrived at Manus 8 October, and sailed for the operations in the Philippines 6 November.

Coghlan, commissioned 10 July 1942, Lieutenant Commander B. Tompkins in command; and reported to the Pacific Fleet.
She conducted convoy escort duty from Humboldt Bay and Palau to Leyte, and supported the landings at Ormoc Bay on 7 and 8 December, firing in the heavy kamikaze attack on the first day.

 Coghlan
Joseph Bulloch Coghlan, born at Frankfort, Ky., 9 December 1844, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1863.
After taking part in the raids on Baker and Tarawa Islands from 15 to 17 September and the attack on Wake on 5 October, Coghlan replenished at Pearl Harbor and sailed on 31 October for escort and screening duties in the assault on the Gilberts.
Coghlan sailed from Pearl Harbor 22 January 1944 to screen carriers giving air coverage to the landings in the Marshalls.

She sailed from San Francisco 22 September 1942 for Pearl Harbor and Kodiak, Alaska, arriving 13 October for convoy and patrol duty.
On 26 March her group turned a larger Japanese force back in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands.
She bombarded Holtz and Chicago Harbors 26 April, and with the southern support group covered the landings on Attu from 11 May to 2 June.

 Ship-to-ship battle. U.S. military aircraft could not find U.S. and Japanese armadas near Komandorskis.
Coghlan was closely related in configuration to Bailey while Dale and Monaghan were older, commissioned in 1935.
The ships were strung out in scouting line six miles long, steering N. by E. Destroyer Coghlan was in the van, flagship Richmond next, followed by Bailey flying Captain Rigg's (Commodore of the squadron from which Bailey had been drawn) pennant, then Dale.
Radar contacts are made at 0730 by Coghlan and Richmond at the head of the scouting line.

Nov. 6, 1941 - USS Somers (DD 381) and the cruiser USS Omaha (CL 4) captured the Odewald, a German blockade runner, in the central Atlantic.
24, 1943 - USS Leary (DD 158) was sunk during an escort mission in the North Atlantic and became the third (and last) American destroyer to be sunk by a German U-boat.

COGHLAN was probably also firing on unlucky T.159.
The Americans may have driven Captain Sawamura off but they hadn't sunk him, as YUZUKI and KIRI were both able to withdraw from the embattled beachhead in good order early on 12 December.

Our Total: 1 DD, 1 AP loaded, 6 planes, 2 landing craft, ammo depot, fuel depot, derrick and other shore damage.
All DD's supported these teams at 1500 yards with main and machine gun batteries.

This was Task Group 8.6 (TG 8.6) consisting of the TG flagship, the light cruiser USS Richmond (CL-9), the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35) and the destroyers USS Bancroft (DD-598), USS Caldwell (DD-605), USS Coghlan (DD-606), and USS Gillespie (DD-609).
After the bombardment, USS Indianapolis and the destroyers Coghlan and Gillespie make a sweep 100 miles (161 km) southwest of Attu and sink the Japanese transport Akagane Maru.
British and Gurkha troops operating behind Japanese lines today had their first encounter with the enemy since they crossed into Burma ten days ago to attack railways and other communications in Japanese-held territory.

KALININ BAY (CVE-68) also joined the hunter/ killer group just before the conclusion of the operation but, despite the additional escort carrier, success eluded the unit.

The USA started a massive production program for these weapons, with a total of about 39,200 being built by the end of the war.
