Hale conducted shakedown training in the Caribbean and training exercises on the East Coast before departing Halifax for the Pacific combat zone 21 September.
Hale departed 8 November 1943 for the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, the first step in America's amphibious sweep across Micronesia.
Hale to Pearl Harbor 8 December to train the next assault and sailed 21 December for the Ellice Islands.

Hale returned to Pearl Harbor 8 December to train for the next assault and sailed 21 December for the Ellice Islands.
After acting as antisubmarine screen and screening ship for escort carriers supporting the Hollandia landings in New Guinea, Hale returned to Seeadler Harbor 4 7 May. She then steamed to the Solomons for the final rehearsals for the Marianas campaign.
Hale departed as a unit of Admiral Mitscher's famed Task Force 38, 1 July 1945, bound for crippling strikes against Japan itself.

 Hale
Eugene Hale was born at Turner, Maine, 6 June 1836.
He was elected to the Maine legislature 1867-68, to the House of Representatives 1869-79, and succeeded Hannibal Hamlin in the Senate, serving from 1881 to 1911.
Senator Hale retired from politics in 1911 and spent the remainder of his life in Ellsworth, Maine, and in Washington, D.C., where he died 27 October 1918.

The second Hale (DD-642) was laid down 23 November 1942, launched 4 April 1943 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; sponsored by Mrs.
In the Mediterranean from August 1959 - February 1960 Hale continued a peace-keeping and goodwill role.
She was transferred to Colombia 23 January 1961 under the Military Assistance Program and served as Antioquia (DD-01) until stricken 20 December 1973 and sold for scrap.

The second ABBOT (DD 629) was laid down on 21 September 1942 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works, launched on 17 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
She and her charges remained with the invasion force throughout the decisive Battle of the Philippine Sea in which TF 58 shattered the remnants of Japanese naval air power.
About a week later, on 26 June, she and HALE (DD-642) joined forces to slash a Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" twin-engine bomber.

She and Hale (DD–642) splashed one plane 25 October.
After the Battle for Leyte Gulf, she escorted Mount Olympus (AGC–8) and Auriga (AK–98) to Manus Island and returned to Leyte 20 November to protect Allied convoys bringing reinforcements.

He was a "plank owner" of the USS Hale, DD-642 (a Fletcher-class destroyer), and served as a sonarman in the South Pacific campaign from the Gilbert Islands to the end of the war.
The Hale was the first destroyer to shell one of the Japanese home islands.

On 5 December 1944 the BLACK proceeded in company with the USS KIDD (DD-661) and USS HALE (DD-642) to Manus and four days later departed for Pearl Harbor.
She arrived on 19 December 1944, fueled and sailed immediately for San Francisco for a major yard overhaul, Arriving in San Francisco on 24 December 1944, she entered the Moore Dry-dock yard in Oakland on 26 December 1944 and underwent overhaul until 7 February 1945.

Stricken on 2-1-74 and then sold to Taiwan on 5-6-74 and cannibalized.
Later reclassified as a DDG and scheduled for decommissioning in December 2003.
