  USN Ships--USS Black (DD-666)
Black's first combat operations took place during that month and the next, as she served in the newly-captured Gilbert Islands on patrol, escort and air-sea rescue duties.
In July Black screened battleships and cruisers during two bombardments of the Japanese home islands and, on 15 August 1945, the day Japan agreed to surrender, was present during one of the Pacific War's final Kamikaze suicide plane attacks.
USS Black was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Hugh D. Black (1903-1942), who was killed in action during the sinking of USS Jacob Jones (DD-130) in February 1942.

After the cessation of hostilities Black remained off Japan assisting in the occupation until 1 September when, as a unit of TF 72, she departed with the occupation forces for Inchon, Korea.
Black was recommissioned 18 July 1951 and reported to the Atlantic Fleet.

Cadlo was also exposed to asbestos during the repeated firing of the BLACK’s three and five inch guns in combat, which caused thermal insulation throughout the ship to vibrate and emit asbestos dust.
Cadlo and the crew of the BLACK were also heavily exposed to asbestos during a three–month overhaul at Long Beach Naval Shipyard in late 1965, involving extensive thermal insulation removal and installation.

Hugh David Black was born in Oradell, New Jersey, on 29 June 1903.
He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1922, graduated in 1926, and served on board USS Richmond, mainly in the Far East, between 1926 and 1928.
Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Black was assigned to the Naval Training Station, San Diego, California, in 1933-1934, then served on board the destroyer Upshur and during 1935-38 commanded the minesweeper Lark.

Four boilers were placed on the line and the DD built up a rooster tail in pursuit.

We are seeking information on the USS Black and her crews.
My grandfather Anthony Giaquinto served aboard the Black during WWII and survived the war, but unfortunately died before I was born.
The ship was sunk and he was one of only a few survivors.he died while I was young, Anyone with any information about this ship I would like to hear from and would be gratefully appreciated.

Gr8 site, i was on the uss fl dd-666 from 55-59 gunners mate, had 3 brothers in to one on the BB-62 N, J. one with me on the fl, & last one in 61.
I served on the USS Orleck DD 886 in 65 & 66 and aboard the USS DeHaven DD 727 in 66 & 67, the whole time in WESTPAC and around Vietnam.
I still remember taking on ammo from an AE in a rough sea a nd having the powder casings bouncing off the deck as the pallet slammed the deck from the highwire and burst open.
