Melvin was laid down 6 July 1943 by Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, in Kearny, N.J. launched on 17 October 1943, sponsored by Miss Gertrude C. Bailey, grand-niece of Lt. Melvin; and commissioned on 24 November 1943, with Commander Warner R. Edsall in command.
On 8 July Melvin sailed for Eniwetok, whence on the 18th, she sailed in the screen of the transports carrying troops to Guam, off which she screened transports and oilers from 22 July to 7 August.
Melvin remained with the aircraft carriers until 10 August when she sailed north to join TF 92 in an anti-shipping sweep and bombardment of Paramushiro.

There she underwent intensive fire support training and 31 May departed with TG 5217 for Saipan.
Melvin recommissioned 26 February 1951 and sailed 1 Jung for Newport to join the Atlantic Fleet's DesRon 24 and bolster the 2d and 6th Fleets so that they could spare destroyers for the U.N. effort in Korea.

In the battle of Surigao Strait on 25 October 1944 at 03:09 she was hit by one or two torpedoes fired by the American destroyer Melvin and set on fire.
She withdrew from the action but at 03:45 C or Q turrets' (or possible both) magazines exploded and she broke into two sections.
Later investigations concluded that the USS Melvin, DD-680 was the destroyer responsible.

The Melvin's crewmen have been waging an effort to have a ship named in honor of their former commander.
MELVIN later operated with fast carrier forces attacking the Japanese home islands and supporting the Okinawa campaign.
MELVIN returned to the states after the war for decommissioning and Commander Atkins was detached and reported to the Commandant 8th Naval District as Prospective Commanding Officer HOLDER, placing her in commission on 18 May 1946.

The Melvin is shown in her dark Measure 21 scheme which earned her the nickname the "Blue Devil" in World War Two.
I felt the need to scratch-build her radars and propellers since the ones in the kit were pretty crappy.
