		Stockham (DD-683) was laid down on 19 December 1942 by the Bethlehem Steel Co. at San Francisco, Calif., launched on 25 June 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
		In November 1954, Stockham entered Boston Naval Shipyard and, at the completion of her overhaul in February 1955, she shook down in the Caribbean.
		Stockham returned to the 6th Fleet in the fall of 1956; visited France, Italy, and Greece, and participated in an antisubmarine exercise with American and Italian ships.

		Stockham saw combat during the engagement at Leon, Nicaragua, on 6 October 1915, a little over a month before his departure from that troubled Latin American nation.
		Despite the fact that he was without the protection of a gas mask, he continued with undaunted courage and valor to direct and assist in the evacuation of the wounded in an area saturated with gas and swept by heavy artillery fire, until he himself collapsed from the effects of the gas.” Gy.
		Stockham was belatedly and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by an Act of Congress on 21 December 1939, over 20 years after his sacrifice.

		• On 27 August 1945, Stockham was operating with Third Fleet Admiral William Halsey’s Flagship Task Group, battleships Missouri and Iowa with three destroyers of Squadron 21 and converted destroyer escort Gosselin (APD 126), approaching Japan and anchoring in peace in Sagami Wan.
		Astern in column order were Southerland (DD 743), Twining (DD 540), San Diego (CL 53), Gosselin and Wedderburn (DD 684), the first warships of the Occupation Forces to anchor in Tokyo Bay.

		She tasted her first antiaircraft combat at 0515 on 19 June when a "Zeke" tried to bomb Stockham (DD-683) and then began a strafing run on Yarnall.
		Three guns of her main battery quickly took the intruder under fire and began scoring hits on him.
		At about 1045, Yarnall and Stockham encountered the first carrier based air of the battle when five "Val" dive bombers peeled off to attack the two picket destroyers.
