John Reeves Pierce, born in Cristobal, Canal Zone, 3 November 1906, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1928.
John R. Pierce departed from her assigned position the following day, but she continued a Caribbean sea-vigil from Jamaica to the Canal Zone until returning to Norfolk 14 December.
John R. Pierce spent the next year operating out of Norfolk; and during off-shore surveillance patrols in January 1964 she escorted five Cuban boats, which were illegally fishing in U.S. territorial waters, to Key West for internment.

The O’BANNON (DD 450) was the first to draw blood when she sank, on 5 April 1943, the Japanese submarine RO-34 by gunfire after forcing the submarine to the surface.
In October 1956, KNAPP (DD 565) was detached from the Squadron and in January 1957 the new USS McCAIN (DL 3) joined the squadron and replaced BRAINE as flagship, BRAINE moving to Division 212.
In July 1960 the AMMEN (DD 527) was seriously damaged in a collision and was inactivated, and USS STODDARD was shifted from DESDIV 211 to DESDIV 212.

USS John R. Pierce (DD-753), an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer, is the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Lieutenant Commander John Reeves Pierce, who commanded the Argonaut (SM-1), a transport submarine, which was lost during battle in January of 1943.
John R. Pierce (DD-753) was laid down by the Bethlehem Steel Co., Staten Island, New York, 24 March 1944; launched 1 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
Pierce; and commissioned 30 December 1944 at Brooklyn Navy Yard, Commander C. Simmers in command.

John R. Pierce (DD-753) was laid down by the Bethlehem Steel Co., Staten Island, N.Y., 24 March 1944; launched 1 September 1944, sponsored by Mrs.
When the Communist-controlled Syfian Army threatened King Hussein's pro-Western government of Jordan during August and September 1957, destroyers, including John R. Pierce, patrolled the ancient sea lanes of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea to guard against possible intervention by Nasser's Egypt.
John R. Pierce received one battle star for service during the Korean War.

June 26, 1950 - USS De Haven (DD 727) and USS Mansfield (DD 728) evacuated 700 American and foreign nationals from Inchon, South Korea.
(DD 850), and USS John R. Pierce (DD 753) were among the numerous ships that "quarantined" Cuba to prevent further construction of Soviet nuclear missile on the Cuban mainland.
June 2, 1969 - USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) was cut in two by Melbourne (R 21), an Australian aircraft carrier, in the South China Sea.

 Sumner Class
The SEAMAN which was never completed, lost her bow to fix the COLLETT (DD-730) which was damaged in a collision with AMMEN (DD- 557) in Aug. 1960; killing 11 of AMMEN's crew.
After conversion, the John W. Thomason was used for extensive trials which upon the conclusion of she became the new flagship of Destroyer division 72 in March 1961.
However, it was determined that IF John W. Thomason was going to be successful as a hunter-killer destroyer, its' sonar had to be updated in order for it to detect the submarines, its DASH weapon system allowed it to destroy (DASH had 22.5 mile ASW kill range).

In the meantime the USS JOHN R. PIERCE (DD-753) did make contact and followed her until KENNEDY arrived on station around midnight.
PIERCE was vectored by aircraft to shadow MARUCLA until KENNEDY arrived on station as she was the closest DD when the decision was passed down to board.
