Lowry departed Norfolk early in April 1968 for the Panama Canal, thence for the Far East on her first 7th Fleet deployment of the Vietnam conflict.

Commodore Lowry was born 14 July 1826, at La Guayrs, Venezuela, the son of Robert K. Lowry of Maryland, United States Consul.
Commodore Lowry died at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital, 25 November 1880.

Lowry cleared San Pedro 26 October 1944 tor training at Pearl Harbor and arrived San Pedro Bay 14 December.
The force returned to Ulithi 1 March, from which Lowry sailed 21 March for Okinawa to screen the support carrier group for the invasion until 29 April.

My friend has got his Korean Metal, as he was on the same ship that I was, but now Iam 72 years old and I never did get my Korean Metal, as he said that he did not ask for it, as it just came in the mail one day.
The Lowry participated in the atomic bomb tests in July of 1946.

Three days later she got underway for Pearl Harbor for anti air craft and shore bombardment exercises until the 23d when she sailed on escort duty to Guadalcanal and Ulithi, the staging area for the Okinawa invasion.
The first was downed by the combined fire of the two destroyers and planes from the combat air patrol.
The second tried to crash Lowry and failing, stumbled into Drexler, cutting off all power and starting large gasoline fires.

A natural and frequent target for heavy Japanese aerial attack while occupying advanced and isolated stations, the U.S.S. LOWRY defeated all efforts of enemy Kamikaze and dive-bombing planes to destroyer her.
Constantly vigilant and ready for battle, she sent out early air warnings, provided fighter direction and, with her own gunfire, downed four hostile planes, shared in the destruction of five others and routed many more.
All personnel attached to and serving on board the U.S.S. LOWRY from April 30 to June 22, 1945, are authorized to wear the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION Ribbon.

Rear Admiral Joseph C. Hare is a Pennsylvania native, a 1972 graduate of the Naval ROTC program of Villanova University, and a 1978 graduate of the Villanova School of Law.
Following his training in naval communications and cryptography, he served as communications officer, electronic material officer, and cryptographic security officer aboard U.S. Atlantic Fleet destroyers Lowry (DD-770) and Corry (DD-817).
Afloat tours in the Naval Reserve have included deck watch officer aboard Emory S. Land (AS-39), weapons officer aboard Harold J. Ellison (DD-864), and selected reserve coordinator aboard Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7).

Between 17 and 19 March, she joined Beale (DD-471), Daly (DD-519), Hutchins (DD- 476) and Mullany (DD-528) in a fruitless anti shipping sweep along the coast of New Guinea near enemy-held Wewak.
On 13 May, Ammen returned to radar picket duty, relieving Lowry (DD-770) as fighter director on station 16 about 50 miles west northwest of the peninsula on Okinawa known as Zampa Misaki.
Over the next SIX days, the destroyer directed her CAP fighters out to meet a number of raids, but she, herself, fought no engagements with enemy aircraft.

Their gunners sprang to action, each ship converging their fire on the planes diving out of the sun.
One plane splashed in a ball of fire into the sea, the other tried to crash Lowry missed, banked steeply and cartwheeled into Drexier's midships.
