Ernest G. Small (DD-838) was launched on 14 June 1945 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, sponsored by Mrs E. Small, and commissioned on 21 August 1945 with Commander T. McGrath, USN, in command.
Ernest G. Small sailed on 12 June for Norfolk and engaged in type exercises in the Virginia Capes Operating Area.

From 9 February to 10 April 1948 she cruised in the Caribbean and on 7 June began a midshipman cruise to the Mediterranean, calling at Lisbon, Genca, Casablanca and returning to Norfolk on 21 July.
Attached to Task Force 77, she was a unit of the blockade and escort force for the Taiwan area.
In March 1959 she was assigned while on her annual Pacific cruise to the operational control of the Air Force to aid in the "Discoverer" earth satellite program.

She was re-classified DDR 838 on 18 July 1952.
On 3 April 1947 while anchored off Block Island she grounded in a violent wind and rain storm, but, re-floated with aid from two tugs she returned to Boston where repairs were made.
Re-commissioned as DDR 838 on 2 December 1962 she followed training exercises off the California coast with her first peacetime tour of the Far East which lasted from 11 July 1963 through 29 January 1954.

Since she was incomplete at the end of the war, further construction was canceled on 7 January 1946, and the incomplete ship was delivered to the Navy on 28 February 1947.
Portions of her hull were used to repair Ernest G. Small (DD- 838).
The remainder of her hull was then berthed with the Pacific Reserve Fleet where it remained until sold for scrapping to the National Metal and Steel Co., on 23 March 1959.

The Galloping Ghost of the Korean Coast was the Destroyer Ernest G. Small DD-838.
The Small had been mined in the Harbor at Hungnam, while returning to Japan about 85 feet of her bow broke off in heavy seas.
The Small made it to the port of Kure, staeming backwards and under tow by a fleet tug, a distance of about 400 miles.

Keels for Castle (DD 720) and Woodrow R. Thompson (DD 721) were laid down 11 July and 1 August 1945 at Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Port Newark, New Jersey, Thompson was launched 16 March 1946; Castle was never officially launched.
Keels for Lansdale (DD 766) and Seymour D. Owens (DD 767) were laid down at Bethlehem Steel, San Francisco, April 2 and 3 1944.
In 1956, the two were towed to Long Beach, where their hulls were used to repair Floyd B. Parks and Ernest G. Small.

Rear Admiral Small passed away in Brooklyn on December 27th, 1944.
Small was given the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism" as commanding officer of the heavy cruiser Salt Lake city during the night action off Savo Island, Oct. 11-12, 1942.
In this action one heavy cruiser, one transport and four destroyers of the enemy force were sunk, another cruiser was badly damaged and several other Japanese vessels probably sunk.

With the DD 692 SUMNER class continuing to be overloaded with anti-aircraft capabilities to protect the carrier forces, the resulting effect was a lack of speed and required range.
