Steinaker (DD-863) was laid down on 1 September 1944 by the Bethlehem Steel Co., Staten Island, N.Y.launched on 13 February 1945, sponsored by Miss Carol Steinaker; and commissioned on 26 May 1945 Comdr.
Steinaker entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 1 July 1952 for conversion to a radar picket destroyer and was classified as DDR-863.
Steinaker was assigned to the 7th Fleet from 20 May trough 1 October and participated in naval gunfire support operations off Binh Thuan and Phu Yen Provinces, "Sea Dragon" operations off the coast of North Vietnam to interdict seaborne infiltration of Communist forces into South Vietnam; and antiaircraft picket duty off the demilitarized zone.

USS Steinaker (DD/DDR-863) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Private First Class Donald Baur Steinaker USMCR (1922–1942) who was killed in action on Guadalcanal and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
Steinaker was laid down by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation at Staten Island in New York on 1 September 1944, launched on 13 February 1945 by Miss Carol Steinaker and commissioned on 26 May 1945.
Steinaker was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 24 February 1982, transferred to Mexico and renamed Netzahualcoyotl.

In his Substantive Appeal, the veteran stated that he was treated at the Long Beach VA Hospital in 1979 for cancer of the right true vocal cord and in 1982 he had a complete laryngectomy.
At a hearing in May 1990, the veteran testified that, while serving on the USS STEINAKER, he worked on a crossover valve wrapped with asbestos.

In 1963 New entered the shipyards and underwent FRAM I conversion and was reclassified DD 818 and remained DD until sold to S. Korea in 1976.
This photo was taken of the New DD 818 in 1973 in a port that had like a 15 foot tide that came in and out so fast that it caught the BM off guard and the mooring lines sounded like the 5'' 38 had gone off.

USS Rush was then transferred to the navy of the Republic of Korea and became ROKS Kang Won DD 922 operating with the South Korean Navy until 1979.

Then served aboard the USS Steinaker from January of 1963 to February 1966, this makes me one of only a handfull of guys who ever served aboard both configurations, DDR and DD.
Went thru FRAM II at the Boston Naval Shipyard August of 1964 to September 1965.
The R, for Radar Picket, designation was used when the Steinaker was used as an extension of the land based DEW line and stayed on station for 30 days at a time in the North Alantic.

(DD-850) at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, have lead an expedition to document ARM Netzahualcoyotl (D-102)/ex-USS Steinaker (DD-863).
Three volunteers traveled at their own expense to Manzanillo, Mexico to document the last Gearing (FRAM upgrade) destroyer in operation.

A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, Dr. Doyle served in the USS Steinaker DD-863, and later in South Vietnam as a Naval Intelligence officer (NILO Ben Tre) with numerous Army, Navy, and Coast Guard units operating in the eastern Mekong Delta region in 1970 and 1971.
While teaching at Penn State in 1994, Dr. Doyle published the first interdisciplinary study of the American captivity experience, Voices from Captivity: Interpreting the American POW Narrative, and became a Fulbright Lecturer of American Studies at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität- Münster (Germany).
