 DD 865 Charles R Ware
Charles R. Ware (DD-865) was launched 12 April 1945 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Staten Island, N.Y.; sponsored by Mrs.
Ware aided in the training of members of the Naval Reserve, then took part in a large scale Arctic operation before preparing for a 1950 tour with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
During the summer of 1959, Charles R. Ware took part in the historic Operation "Inland Sea," the first passage of a naval force through the Saint Lawrence Seaway into the Great Lakes.

Nearly 200 former officers and crewmen who served aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865) at various times between 1945 and 1974 met August 25-28, 2005 in their final "home port", Athens, TN, in what is believed to be one of the largest reunion of veterans of a single destroyer in recent times.
Also included were smaller models of the Ware at other times in her working life; of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and of the Dauntless dive bomber which Lt. Ware piloted when he and his radioman, ARM 1/c William Stambaugh disappeared into the sea after successful attacks on Japanese carriers.
The USS Charles R. Ware was decommissioned in 1974 in Galveston, Texas.

I was aboard the Ware when she went into the yard after we unloaded the ammunition in Boston.
i was abord the ware when it was in new port ri left and went to brookland ship yard late in 1960 or early 1961 stayed in reckstay i left about mid 1964 transfered to uss noa bound for mayport fl.
The Ware left the Shipyard with the new ASROC installed and promptly ran into the worst hurricane I ever incountered.

 DANFS: USS Charles R. Ware (DD-685)
Charles Rollins Ware, born 11 March 1911 in Knoxville, Tenn., enlisted in the Navy 14 June 1929, and the following year was appointed to the Naval Academy.
Through two cruises to the Caribbean in the summer of 1949, Charles R. Ware aided in the training of members of the Naval Reserve, then took part in a large-scale Arctic operation before preparing for a 1950 tour with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
She took part in the Naval Review in Lake Saint Louis on 26 June, which was taken by Queen Elizabeth II of England and President D. Eisenhower, and sailed on to call at a number of United States and Canadian ports.

Named for GM 1/c Donald R. McAnn, killed in action during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, October 26, 1942.
Named for LT Charles R. Ware, a Scouting Six pilot, lost at the Battle of Midway, June 4, 1942, when his plane failed to return from the morning attack on the Japanese carrier force.
Ware was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his performance in the face of formidable anti-aircraft fire and fighter opposition at Midway.

Keels for Lansdale (DD 766) and Seymour D. Owens (DD 767) were laid down at Bethlehem Steel, San Francisco, April 2 and 3 1944.
