Arnold J. Isbell, the widow of Captain Isbell; and commissioned on 5 January 1946 with Commander Carlton B. Jones in command.
Arnold J. Isbell emerged from the yard with her new configuration on 4 May 1962.
Arnold J. Isbell visited Pearl Harbor, Subic Bay, Philippines, Hong Kong; and Sasebo, Japan, before returning to Long Beach in May. She began a regular overhaul at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in August.

Isbell was born September 22, 1899 in Oto, Iowa.
Captain Isbell's duty from 1929 until 1940 when he was promoted to the rank of Commander was principally concerned with flying and ordnance.
In 1943 Captain Isbell took command of the USS Card, an escort carrier, for which duty he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for a notable record of German submarine sinkings in the Central Atlantic convoy routes during World War II.

Arnold J. Isbell, the widow of Capt. Isbell; and commissioned on 5 January 1946, Comdr.
Arnold J. Isbell remained in her role as a reserve training ship until 1 February 1974, when she was decommissioned and struck from the Navy list.

Arnold J. Isbell-born on 22 September 1899 in Quimby, Iowa-entered the Naval Academy on 24 July 1917 and graduated on 3 June 1920 (a year ahead of schedule due to acceleration of midshipman training during World War I) with class 21A of the Class of 1921.
Isbell subsequently flew as executive officer of Patrol Squadron (VP) 7F based in aircraft tender Wright (AV-1) from 9 June 1936 to 1 June 1937 before commanding one of the five squadrons of the Aviation Training Department at NAS Pensacola, VN-4D8.
Arnold J. Isbell was o rating out of San Diego when communist forces invaded South Korea on 27 June 1950 and promptly began preparations for an active role in the conflict.

Returning to the Korean coast, she acted as a rescue and communications ship at Pusan during a major fire.

Prior to the actual entrance of the United States in the World War II, Captain Isbell was actively engaged in operations vitally connected with the expansion of our bases.
It was while taking passage on a carrier prior to assuming command that Captain Isbell lost his life when the carrier was hit by bombs from a Japanese plane off Okinawa on March 19, 1945.

Comments: I was recalled and served a tour in Korea from 1952 thru 1953 as MML2.Remember the shore patrol duty and the ship hitting a tidal wave where we lost several people.Would be interested to hear from anyone who might recall the events.
Comments: I was on the A J when it was commissioned in 1945 and then discharged in 1946.
I am doing my senior thesis on the USS Arnold J. Isabell and the action she saw during the Korean War.

Detached from USS Wisconsin in June 1952, he attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, and in June 1953 reported as Head of the Shore and Overseas Bases Section, Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Department, Washington, D. He also served as Officer and Enlisted Requirements Officer and as Action Officer on Medicare Legislation.
Completing that tour of duty in July 1955, he assumed command of the destroyer USS Arnold J. Isbell, participating in two deployments to the Seventh Fleet.
In this assignment he was commended by the Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Forces, U. Pacific Fleet for winning the Battle Efficiency Competition for his ship and for winning Excellence Awards in Engineering, Gunnery, Antisubmarine Warfare, and Operations.
