USS Edson (DD-946) was a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Colonel Merritt “Red Mike” Edson USMC (1897–1955), who was awarded the Medal of Honor while serving as Commanding Officer of the First Marine Raider Battalion.
Edson called at Ciudad Trujillo and Caribbean ports while conducting shakedown training en route to Callao, Peru, where she lay from 18 to 21 February 1959 delivering supplies for the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
Edson served as plane guard for carriers on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf, participated in Sea Dragon operations, patrolled on search and rescue duties and carried out Naval Gunfire Support missions during the conflict in Vietnam.

EDSON is one of the relatively few ships of the U.S. Navy named for a United States Marine, in this case Colonel (later Major General) Merritt Austin Edson who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism defending the U.S. airfield on Guadalcanal against a fanatical Japanese attack.
EDSON was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for her participation in the QUEMON and MATSU Island operations in March 1960.
EDSON was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Medal for her operations in the Vietnam combat zone.

 Marine Raider Battalions in the Pacific Campaign, 1942-1944
Edson and his Raiders, in conjunction with the Marines 1st Parachute Battalion, left their mark on the Guadalcanal campaign during the night of Sept. 1314.
The intense and vicious close quarters fight is known as the Battle of Edsons Ridge or Bloody Ridge.
The legacy of the short-lived Raider history lives on in the perpetual memorial of the former USS Edson (DD-946), the destroyer bearing the name of the first Marine Raider.

EDSON and her crew are entitled to wear the Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon as a result of her eighth deployment to WestPac in 1971.
EDSON as she is today as a Museum Ship at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, New York City.

As a Sherman class destroyer, the Edson is very similar to the Adams class ships which were built by Defoe during World War II.
At 418 feet, the Edson is just a bit shorter than a Defoe Adams class boat.
She was decommissioned in 1988 and went to New York city as part of the city's Intrepid Naval Museum.

While attached to EDSON he served as the ship's legal yeoman.
During his tour he deployed to the Great Lakes region during the 1983 and 1984 Great Lakes cruises in support of Navy recruiting.

In August 1964 when North Vietnamese torpedo patrol boats allegedly attacked American destroyers patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin, Hubbard was nearby screening USS Ticonderoga CVA-14.
Hubbard remained in the area as part of Task Force 77.5 (USS Ticonderoga, CVA-14, USS Edson DD-946, USS Berekley DDG-15, USS Samuel N. Moore DD 747 and Hubbard).
The following day sorties were sent out by the two carriers in the area to counterattck against North Vietnamese torpedo boats and supporting facilities.

"The mission of Wisconsin Naval Ship Association, Inc. (WINSA) is to preserve the Navy destroyer, the USS Edson (DD-946), and to bring her to Sheboygan, Wisconsin for future generations to enjoy.
She will serve as a naval museum and educate young Americans, as well as being a tourist attraction and splendid memorial for all veterans.
When the USS Edson arrives in Sheboygan, it will be the second Hull Class Destroyer preserved as a museum ship and the only one displayed in the Midwest.

Commissioned in 1975 through the Navy's Reserve Officer Training Corps program, Rear Adm. Reilly first served aboard USS Edson (DD 946) as Combat Information Center Officer and Damage Control Assistant.
His other shipboard tours include commissioning USS Fletcher (DD 992) as its first Operations Officer; Engineering Officer aboard USS Sterett (CG 31); Executive Officer of USS John Young (DD 973); and as Commanding Officer, USS Halyburton (FFG 40).

After I missed this question I did quite a bit of reading on the Marine Raiders and I have now ordered the book "Edson's Raiders, The First Marine Raider Battalion in World War II".
Twenty-two other U.S. Navy ships are named for men of the 1st Raider Battalion who were killed in action." That makes 23.

THE USS EDSON IS IN PHILADELPHIA UNTIL OCT 2007 AT LEAST ON MUSEUM HOLD.
AS FAR AS GOING TO BAY CITY OR SHEYBOYGEN I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND IF THEY HAVE GOTTEN IT FOR SURE.
