NORFOLK, VA. – More than 350 Sailors aboard the destroyer USS Stump (DD 978) will return to Naval Station Norfolk on Wednesday, Nov. 26 after completing a routine six-month deployment in support of counter-drug operations in the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command area of responsibility, which includes the Caribbean Sea, eastern Pacific and southern Atlantic.
Stump, a Commander, Naval Surface Group Two ship assigned to Destroyer Squadron Six, and its embarked detachment from Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 42, departed her homeport of Norfolk, Va., June 2, 2003.
Stump provided assistance in the form of 75 pounds of fresh food, and fuel to get Okiva to port.

Acting on an international distress call relayed by U.S. Coast Guard District 11, USS Stump (DD 978) conducted recently an 11-hour, high-speed dash to render assistance to a distressed fishing vessel and its six crewmembers while conducting counter-drug operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Stump's RandA Team provided Okiva with fuel and effected engine repairs, allowing her to continue her voyage from Panama to the Galapagos Islands.
USS Stump and its embarked detachment from HSL-42 departed their homeports of Norfolk, Va., and Mayport, Fla., June 2 for a routine six-month deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command area of responsibility, which includes the Caribbean Sea, eastern Pacific and southern Atlantic.

DD 963 Spruance class destroyers were developed to perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW) in support of the US Navy's aircraft carrier strike groups.
After nearly 30 years of honorable service to the fleet, USS Spruance (DD 963) was decommissioned during a ceremony at Naval Station Mayport March 23, 2005.
The last Spruance-class destroyer in service with the US Navy, USS Cushing (DD 985), was decommissioned in San Diego on 21 September 2005.

West Virginia native, Admiral Felix Stump achieved the rank of four star rank and Commander in Chief of all Armed Forces in the Pacific in the early 1950s.
At the time of the donation in 1986, the U.S.S. Stump was West Virginia's flagship.

USS Stump (DD 978), USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) and their embarked detachments from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 42 and 46 joined a task force of two submarines and 11 ships to engage in two-weeks of intensive training.
UNITAS developed the force’s interoperability through a series of training evolutions during a one-week work-up phase, and later tested the forces’ ability to operate as a multinational coalition during a three-day final battle problem.

USS HARRY S. The Norfolk-based destroyer USS Deyo (DD 989) responded recently to a distress call from MV Caroline, a 40-foot German sailboat 480 miles southwest of the Azores.
Deyo was returning to its homeport of Norfolk, Va., along with the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Battle Group when it received the distress call over the bridge-to-bridge radio.
Another Norfolk-based destroyer, USS Stump (DD 978), launched its helicopter to monitor the situation from the air as Deyo's crew moved in to render assistance.

His first assignment was to USS JOHN HANCOCK (DD 981) as First Lieutenant and CIC Officer.
He concurrently served three months as Chief Engineer on USS STUMP (DD 978) during their Mediterranean and Persian Gulf deployment.

In May 1994, he first reported to HSL-46, and deployed as the Detachment Maintenance Officer on the USS Peterson (DD 969) in support of Operation Support Democracy off Haiti, immediately followed by a Mediterranean cruise.
Loughran served as the detachment officer in charge aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CG-47) supporting counter drug operations in the Eastern Pacific.
He reported to HSL-48 and deployed again to the Mediterranean as the Detachment Officer in Charge aboard USS Stump (DD 978), winning the CNO CY98 Ship-Helicopter Safety Award as a result.

In November 1991 Capt. Hardy was assigned to the staff of the commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, where he served as the fleet scheduler until March 1994.
His next assignment was as the executive officer of USS Stump (DD-978) in Norfolk, Va. In November 1995, he reported to the US Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and he graduated with distinction from the Naval Staff College in December 1996.
