  Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-6-23
The GSh-6-23 differs from most American multi-barreled aircraft cannon in that it is gas-operated, rather than externally powered via an electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic system.
Although the engineering difficulties involved in producing a gas-operated rotary cannon with such a high rate of fire are considerable, they create less of a drain on the aircraft's power systems, and they accelerate to their maximum rate of fire much more quickly.
The cannon has 10 pyrotechnic cocking charges, similar to those used in European gas-operated revolver cannon such as the DEFA 554 or Mauser BK-27.

 Revolver cannon at AllExperts
Automatic revolver cannons were developed by Mauser late in WW2 as aircraft guns, and have since been produced by many different European manufacturers (whereas the US, and to a lesser extent Russia, favour the Gatling gun).
The archetypal revolver cannon is the Mauser MK 213, from which almost all current weapons were copied to one extent or another.
The Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon of the late 1800s was not a revolver cannon in the modern sense, being of a Gatling type.

 DEFA : Encyclopedia Entry
DEFA was founded in the Spring of 1946 in the Soviet zone of occupation in Germany as the first film production company in post-War Germany.
All DEFA interests were now incorporated into this new nation as its "people's" film monopoly according to the strictures of Stalinist Communism and socialist realism, and effectively an arm of the government.
DEFA films are now enjoying a revival in Germany and the United States: several titles are now commercially available in NTSC format, and in October 2005 the Museum of Modern Art in New York City hosted a two-week DEFA festival.

 ADEN cannon
The ADEN (named for the Armament Development Establishment, where it was designed, and Enfield, where it is produced) was developed in the late 1940s as a replacement for the older Hispano-Suiza HS 404 20mm cannon used in British aircraft of World War II.
It is based (as are the French DEFA and American M39 cannon) on the mechanism of the German Mauser MG213C, an experimental revolver cannon designed for the Luftwaffe, but never used in combat.
The ADEN is very similar to the French DEFA cannon, and the two weapons use the same range of 30mm ammunition.

However the philosophy of the day was that the air-to-air missile was the wave of the future and that the internal gun was an obsolete holdover from an bygone era.
The Phantoms could carry a podded cannon mounted on the centerline, but it was relatively inaccurate, caused excessive drag which reduced the performance of the Phantom carrying it, and took up a valuable ordinance/fuel station.
