  DESQview
DESQview was developed by Quarterdeck Office Systems which released it in July 1985, four months before Microsoft introduced the first version of Windows.
DESQview was widely thought to be the first program to bring multitasking and windowing capabilities to DOS, but in fact there was a predecessor, IBM's failed TopView, released in 1984, from which DESQview inherited the popup menu.
DESQview was noteworthy in that it supported all common DOS compatible programs and achieved a degree of performance and stability that was remarkable, given the constraints of its host operating system.

 Facts about desqview
At the time, DESQview was the first program to bring multitasking and windowing capabilities to a DOS environment in which any exisisting DOS programs could be used.
Under DESQview, DOS programs could be run concurrently in resizable, overlapping windows (something the first version of Windows could not do).
In one arena, however, DESQview was a lasting success: many multiuser bulletin board systems were based on it, thanks to its modest hardware requirements, its robust multitasking.

If they were executed before DESQview is started, they would not be loaded in banked memory and they would have to care to switch to the correct memory bank before the call, like climbing to the right floor to call for the right salesman.
Should it be loaded before DESQview is active to see which interrupt is used, DESQview will not switch memory during interrupts, and the calls it cannot control will be made to the wrong memory bank and crash the system.
DESQview and Windows environments are similar enough in this respect to kill the two birds with one stone.

The default setting is 9:3, which means DESQview gives the foreground task 9 ``ticks'', or roughly half a second, of CPU time, then gives each of the background tasks 3 ticks.

DESQview did not provide a graphical user interface (GUI).
The DESQview packages have been available for download on the Internet for a few years on at least one stable site (listed below) with no trace of complaint, however neither the host site CharterSoft nor Symantec's corporate counsel will clarify copyright status on direct request.
Claims that the software is "public domain" are unsubstantiated and appear to be based solely on an editor statement at Slashdot.

Article info : The Proof of the Pudding . . .
DESQview was a multitasking environment that supported regular, off-the-shelf DOS applications, of which there were hundreds.
The 386 processor introduced a number of hardware features that QEMM and DESQview together could exploit and manage, such as the ability to supply a virtual display that fooled applications into thinking that they were writing to the real display.
All of us at Quarterdeck used DESQview 386 as it was meant to be used—in a variety of user models, for a variety of tasks, and in challenging environments where plenty of things were going on.

 Enciclopedia - DESQview

The DESQview environment offers three major features utilized by these tools: the ability to switch between applications, a standard way of dealing with windows and fields, and the ability to multitask.
The DESQview menu is usually displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screen but at times the menu will be hidden.
In various situations there will be a selection of fields presented from which the user must choose, or a field in which the user must enter text.

DESQview 386 includes an expanded memory manager, QEMM/386, which converts the extended memory on 80386 machines to expanded memory.
DESQview uses expanded memory to perform multitasking; if expanded memory is not available but disk space is, DESQview can swap programs to a disk file, allowing new programs to take their place.
DESQVIEW INSTALLATION We recommend that you install DESQview according to the instructions listed in "Chapter 1: Installation" of the DESQview Quarterdeck Version 2 manual.

 DESQview/X Technical Perspective
When DESQview performs a task switch to a DOS Extended application, it ensures that the real mode portion of the application is mapped into the conventional memory Application Area and that the protected mode portion is visible in extended memory.
DESQview's ability to window an application and run it in the background is a function of the machine's processor and the type of application.
DESQview API Applications are, by their very nature, well-behaved DOS applications as they use the DESQview API to perform display output.

Frankly, my impression was that only in 9x had Windows finally achieved the kind of multitasking (preemptive I think is the term) that DV had been doing all along--i.e., the kind that really works.
David Kronenfeld wrote that "MicroSoft missed some of the chief virtues of DesqView (and QEMM): totally clear and out front parameter values, which made fixing memory needs/limits, environment glitches, and other infelicities very easy and straightforward." This is true.
What MS got right, though, is that very few computer users actually want to fool around with that sort of thing.

You can run multiple nodes on one cpu with DOS multitaskers such as DESQview, Windows, or OS/2 or you can run one node per CPU and let the CPU's share the same data on a common hard disk via Local Area Network (LAN).
Here is a table to estimate the maximum number of nodes you should run on any given machine under DESQview: CPU Nodes 386-16 1 386-25 2 386-33 3 386-40 4 486-25 5 486-33 8 486-50 10 Note: You can run more than the suggested number of nodes, but performance will decrease with each additional node.
This number is the amount that DESQview will give this node if it can, or if not possible, as much as it can.
