DFS 346 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The DFS 346 was a parallel project to the DFS 228 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft.
While the DFS 228 was essentially of conventional sailplane design, the DFS 346 had highly swept wings with wing fences and a highly streamlined fuselage that its designers hoped would enable it to break the sound barrier.
Since the aircraft was to be of all-metal construction, the DFS lacked the facilities to build it, and construction of the prototype was assigned to Siebel, which is where it was captured by the Red Army.

DFS 228 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The initial design of the DFS 228 was undertaken before the outbreak of war as a research aircraft, the DFS 54, aimed at developing a high-altitude escape system for sailplanes.
The project gave the DFS the opportunity to investigate two additional areas that it was interested in - the effects of wing sweep on sailplane design, and supersonic flight.
The DFS 228 was designed by Felix Kracht and a first prototype was completed in March 1944 and was undergoing gliding tests by August, carried aloft piggyback on a Dornier Do 217.

The fuselage of the DFS 228 V1 consisted of three circular sections: the nose section containing the cockpit; a center section which contained the landing skid, fuel tanks and a Zeiss infra-red camera; and the tail section with the Walter HWK 509A-1 or A-2 rocket engine.
The new cockpit arrangement was incorporated in to the DFS 228 V2 and later aircraft.

DFS assumes the office of ombudsman would be required to promulgate regulations; recruit, train and provide meeting and other programs for volunteers, publicize its existence; prepare and distribute written notices to facilities explaining the function of the office and procedures for filing complaints.
In addition, DFS assumes the office would be required to inform recipients and their families or guardians of their rights and entitlements under state and federal rules and regulations through the distribution of educational materials.
DFS estimates expense and equipment to be $60,810 in FY 04; $31,740 in FY 05; and $32,693 in FY 06.

DFS assumes the program to generate nearly $20,000 for general revenue in the odd numbered fiscal years (FY 2005 and FY 2007) since the private fire investigator renews every two years.

 DFS 228 walkaround
This wooden prototype came to be known as the DFS 228.
DFS would mate the detachable cockpit with a wooden sailplane design featuring a wing aspect ratio of 10 and powered by an off the shelf HWK509B-l bi-fuel liquid rocket engine with modifications and known as the 509D.
This is the story of the DFS 228, an ultra high altitude photo reconnaissance machine and inspired by designers from DFS who never forgot the August sailplane soaring disaster at the 1938 Summer Rhön/Wasserkuppe Sailplane Competitions.

 DFS 228 Reconnaisance Glider
The DFS design, in common with many proposals which first saw the light of day in the early stages of the war was stopped, only to be later resurrected with insufficient time to complete the project by the war's end.
V1 had a conventional pilot's seat, inclined slightly to the rear and set on a pair of rails to be ejected from the cockpit section when that had descended to a height at which it was safe for the pilot to take to his own parachute.
David Myhra's Schiffer Military History book "DFS 228" is ambivalent about the provenance, but Phil Butler's "War Prizes" places this airframe at RAE Farnborough and the RAE negative numbers co-incide with his date information, so I am confident in siting these photographs at the RAE Farnborough dump in 1946.

DFS 228 V1 The German Institute for Sailplane Flight (Deutsche Forschungsalstalt für Segelflug or DFS) promised to meet the RLM's need for an uninterceptable reconnaissance aircraft with this remarkable rocket-powered sailplane, which was a true ancestor of the Lockheed U-2.
Shelved from 1940 through early 1943 due to pressure for other work, the 228 was resurrected and two prototypes completed in 1943.
The 228 was made almost entirely of wood, with a pressurized metal nose compartment that could be jettisoned in an emergency and recovered by parachute.

As well as testing engines the Do 217 was used to test a number of prototype aircraft such as the Messerschmitt P.1073 (Me 328) light fighter, with the little Messerschmitt being mounted "piggyback" fashion the mother plane.

The DFS 228 never got operational due to the end of the war, but two prototypes were build and the production of 10 DFS 228 A-0 had already started.
Plans were made for a further development, the DFS 346, which was planned to be supersonic (Mach 1.9) at 66.000 feet (20,1 km).
