DJ Grandmaster Flash honoured : thewest.com.au
Flash said break dancers and graffiti artists were inspired by the technique, known as cutting or scratching, but crucially emcees started rapping over the beats.
Flash, born Joseph Saddler, started experimenting with turntables as a teenager at home and was part of the seventies New York DJ scene.
Flash's influence could be seen today in the mixtape CDs that form the bedrock of the urban music industry and are the means for young artists to get heard in clubs and on radio, Chamillionaire said.

DJ Grandmaster Flash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grandmaster Flash (born Joseph Saddler on January 1, 1958 in Barbados) is a hip hop musician and DJ; one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing.
The speed and dexterity needed showed why Saddler was called Flash, although he got the nickname in school due to the fact that he hung around with another guy named Gordon (from Flash Gordon).
The classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel," released in 1981 was the best display of their skills (combing elements of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust", Chic's "Good Times" and samples from Blondie's Rapture), but it was their least successful single at the time.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 - Biography
DJ Grandmaster Flash and his group the Furious Five were hip-hop's greatest innovators, transcending the genre's party-music origins to explore the full scope of its lyrical and sonic horizons.
Flash was born Joseph Saddler in Barbados on January 1, 1958; he began spinning records as teen growing up in the Bronx, performing live at area dances and block parties.
Flash and the Five's next effort, 1982's "The Message," was even more revelatory -- for the first time, hip-hop became a vehicle not merely for bragging and boasting but for trenchant social commentary, with Melle Mel delivering a blistering rap detailing the grim realities of life in the ghetto.

The Low End Theory: The Furious Funk Of Flash
The Message by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (released in 1982 on Sugar Hill Records) was in my opinion the first Hip Hop release to establish the then nascent music and culture of Hip Hop as a serious and respectable art form in the mainstream and around the world.
Grandmaster Flash (named after "The Grand Master" Bruce Lee and Flash for his speed on the turntables) was always interested in vinyl even as a child.
Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five as a group had an opportunity to release the first rap single, but Flash declined as he only believed that those in the Bronx would be feeling it, and he wanted to keep everything underground and real.

Flash’s scratch mix worked the beat portion of a record; his scratches sounded like ferocious drumming, an intensity of passion that rocked any melody it touched.
While the big-name DJs were creating, polishing, and dramatizing their plush mixes to the sound of Philadelphia soul and European disco, these turntable swingsters were establishing their own disco circles at neighborhood house parties.
Any doubt about who Flash was and why ended with the early 1981 release of "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel." Checking in at 7:18, it was the first time any record label had ever recorded and released a DJ playing a long mix.

By 1971, Flash was inventing and demonstrating innovative dj techniques with turntables in response to his many observations at parties, and of other djs, thus later claiming the turntables to be an instrument..
This is when the dj literally places their hand on the embodiment of the vinyl, or middle section of the record, and proceed to move or rub the material in a backward or forward motion in conjunction with their fingers on the dj mixer in a left to right, or right to left lateral movement.
In Flash’s first years of displaying this technique he was known for “making the record dirty” because not until his time did djs ever place their hands in the body of a record.

 Scratching
Scratching is a DJ or turntablist technique originated by Grand Wizard Theodore, an early hip hop DJ from New York (AMG).
A simple scratch is performed by moving a vinyl record back and forth with your hand while it is playing on a turntable, creating a distinctive sound that has come to be an almost universally recognized aspect of hip hop music.
Theodore developed scratching from DJ Grandmaster Flash, who describes scratching as, "nothing but the back-cueing that you hear in your ear before you push it [the recorded sound] out to the crowd." (Toop, 1991) Kool Herc was also an important early figure.

Grandmaster Flash - PopMatters Concert Review
Before I arrived at Spa on the night legendary hip-hop DJ Grandmaster Flash was to perform, I wondered if the crowd would be any different to a previous, non-hip hop evening at the club.
Grandmaster Flash continued his set by introducing a retrospective set list, including older hits such as Dr. Dre's "Still D.R.E" (2001), Missy Elliot's "One Minute Man" (2001), and Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Gin and Juice" (1993).
The night at Spa proved to mimic what Grandmaster Flash represents to us today: it was a look back at the ways hip-hop has evolved throughout the years, but more importantly it also demonstrated how no one will forget where it came from any time soon.
