  DJBDNS
DJBDNS is a simple and secure DNS implementation by Prof.
DJB feels that it is better to re-use existing tools (such as rsync and ssh) than to implement separate protocols for zone-transfers, as was done with bind.
DJBDNS is licensed to permit free redistribution and use, and the source code is publicly disclosed, but the license does not permit distribution of modifications (and is thus not open source or free software).

 A look at djbdns
One of the DNS servers listed was djbdns; which was presented as lacking in features and not ready to handle many sites that are currently served by BIND.
Bernstein, however, is confident enough of the security of djbdns that he is offering a $500 reward to the first person who turns up a security hole in the code.
djbdns is "almost free," in that you can download it, compile it, and redistribute it.

FGA: Some of what is said about "djbdns" is wrong
Some of what is said about djbdns is wrong.
Many of their falsehoods stem from applying BIND Think to djbdns - thinking that it works like BIND, thinking that it is configured and operated like BIND, and thinking that it shares the same fundamental design flaws as BIND.
The idea that djbdns does not support DNS service over TCP is a falsehood, and the deduction that is then made from that premise is thus wholly unsupported.

NewsForge | djbdns: An alternative to BIND
djbdns is easy to install and configure, and is much less complex than BIND, with essentially the same functionality.
A djbdns DNS server is designed to be just that, a DNS server, meaning that by default it won't be resolving queries for machines outside of your authority.
To run djbdns, you first need to install another DJB program called daemontools, which is basically a collection of tools used to manage various Unix daemons.

Security is one of the primary motivations for the development of djbdns.
DJBDNS will be dead in two years from now, as soon as DJB loses his interest in it, like happened to qmail.
Some time after DJB loses his interest on it and forgot to continue the project, you'll have to face your boss and say "Yes, I know I've done a lot of advertising about OpenSource and all about, but this project is dead".

The djbdns program is a simple and secure DNS implementation created by Daniel J. Bernstein due to his frustrations with repeated BIND security holes.
This is also probably why many other Linux distributions do not include it.
The only limitation is that one can not legally distribute a modified version of djbdns; modifications have to be distributed as diff patches.

Installing djbdns for Name Service Part Two
djbdns, formerly known collectively as DNScache,is a replacement for BIND, written by Dan Bernstein, the author of qmail, a mail transport agent that has been rapidly growing in popularity in the last few years.
djbdns, like qmail, was written as a replacement to the traditional program used for its service, keeping the needs and requirements of the modern internet in mind.
Hopefully, you've come to the conclusion that djbdns isn't all that difficult to install or use.

Installing djbdns for Name Service Part One
Since tinydns and the other response daemons included with the djbdns package are so limited in their abilities, exposing only these to the outside world, with a limited set of records (perhaps with walldns serving in-addr.arpa records) allows for a reduction in the risk associated with running a name server.
In a follow up article, we'll discuss installing some of the other portions of djbdns, including walldns for reverse ip resolution, using axfrdns to allow secondary nameservers to perform zone transfers, and setting up a secondary name server using the djbdns tools.

The author is sufficiently confident that djbdns is secure such that he is prepared to offer a reward for holes out of his own pocket - something almost unheard of in the software industry, let alone for software whose source is made publicly available!
A point well worth noting is that djbdns is some 13,000 lines of C code and Bind is well over 100,000 lines of code (I've heard rumours Bind 9 is 300,000 lines).
