  DJIA - Best-Ranks.com
DJIA is a stock index (one of many) commonly used as an indicator of changes in the general level of the stock market or stock prices in the United States.
The DJIA is used as an overall indicator of market performance although criticism is periodically raised over how it is calculated, as well as the fact that so few companies are included so that it may not be a truly representative indicator of market activity.
The DJIA is a price-weighted average - meaning a $80 stock has more effect on the index than a $20 stock - of 30 large, well-known industrial stocks which are generally leaders in their industry (blue chips) and are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

 Fool.com: Index Center
The DJIA is the best-known market indicator in the world, partly because it is old enough that many generations of investors have become accustomed to quoting it, and partly because the U.S. stock market is the world's most valuable.
The DJIA is a price-weighted index calculated daily based on the price of each company without any regard to the relative size of each component.
The companies of the DJIA are not likely to disappear -- they are some of the largest in the U.S. An investor looking for low risk, capital preservation, and some income from dividends would be the ideal purchaser of products linked to the Dow.

 Value Investing DJIA 1997 Components
First published on May 26, 1896 with a measurement of 40.94 points for 12 stocks, the DJIA is no longer an actual average due to stock splits and other recapitalizations.
The base expanded to 30 stocks, the stocks comprising the index have changed over time, and the stocks are not limited to industrial companies.
The only current DJIA stock included in the original average is General Electric, and it has not always been included in the intervening period.

 Market Indices
For example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is an index of 30 "blue chip" U.S. stocks of industrial companies (excluding transportation and utility companies).
The stocks included in the DJIA are not changed often.
Unlike many other indices, the DJIA is not a "weighted" index (that is, the Index does not take market capitalization into account).

According to Dumortier, since the DJIA is priced-weighted where the weight of each stock that makes up the index is determined by the stock’s price rather than the stock’s market capitalisation, it is not an accurate measure of the American economy or the stock market.
The DJIA was conspicuously absent from the party the second time around as the index has only four tech stocks out of 30 component stocks.

So, for example, an ETF invested in the stocks contained in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) would give a redeeming shareholder the actual securities that constitute the DJIA instead of cash.
Because of the limited redeemability of ETF shares, ETFs are not considered to be—and may not call themselves—mutual funds.
