Direct memory access - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DMA is an essential feature of all modern computers, as it allows devices to transfer data without subjecting the CPU to a heavy overhead.
For so-called "third party" DMA, as is normally used with the ISA bus, the transfer is performed by a DMA controller which is typically part of the motherboard chipset.
A typical usage of DMA is copying a block of memory from system RAM to or from a buffer on the device.

 DMA
Depending on the type of DMA transfer and the characteristics of the controller, a single pair of cycles may terminate to allow the CPU to run for a while, or a complete block of data may be moved without bringing the processor back from the land of the idle.
Once the entire transfer is complete the DMA controller may quietly go to sleep, or it may restart the transfer when the I/O is ready for another block, or it may signal the processor that the action is complete.
DMA was invented to move data between I/O and memory, but now people use it for a variety of other reasons as well.

What is Direct Memory Access (DMA)?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
The DMA can be configured to handle moving the collected data out of the peripheral module and into more useful memory locations (like arrays).
The DMA is intended to be used in low power mode because it uses the same memory bus as the CPU and only one or the other can use the memory at the same time.
If this is not done, the results of the DMA operation are “unpredictable.” Also, the behavior and settings of the DMA module should only be modified when the module is disabled.

 DMA
It is important to understand that although the CPU always releases the bus to the DMA when the DMA makes the request, this action is invisible to both applications and the operating system, except for slight changes in the amount of time the processor takes to execute instructions when the DMA is active.
Whenever a DMA channel is active, the contents of that latch are written to the address bus and kept there until the DMA operation for the channel ends.
Once the DMA has moved the data into this buffer, the operating system will then copy the data from the buffer to the address where the data is really supposed to be stored.
