Also, in North America the 2L-T or similar "L" engine is the most available and probably most realistic, and we don't seem to have all the head cracking problems that plauge you guys.

The engine stalls and is hard to start but after 3-5 minutes of rest it does perfectly fine and engine runs smoothly.
In addition, the engine turns more slowly to move you the same distance forward, meaning you have to rotate heavier wheels with less available HP and torque at any given engine RPM.
Think of it this way: Your engine will turn more to rotate the axle once (ex: 5.38 times instead of stock 4.55 times), but the larger tire means the same axle rotation moves the vehicle farther.

But that engine is not scheduled to be installed in the Ford half-ton pickups or SUVs.
Getting back to the subject of this post, the 4.5 V6 diesel, I think it would make a great addition to the 1/2 ton series and if GM would produce their V6 version of the Dmax and Dodge would use the 4.2 V6 Cummins there would be a lot of excellent choices for the consumer.

Im actually toying with the idea of fitting an engine oil cooler in the front with a small thermo of its own, because ultimately its the oil that need to be cool isnt it.
The thing that puzzles me is the way it spits the water out when the engine is switched off, even when its not that hot.
the reason it spits water out is because the engine gets hotter after its stopped briefly (with no air flow or water circulation) thus reaching higher pressure than the cap can handle and overflowing, thats why late model cars have a recirculating system and retrieve that water back into the cooling system,

Oldsmobile's engines, the 5.7 L LF9 and 4.3 L LF7 V8s and 4.3 L LT6/LT7/LS2 V6, were notoriously unreliable.
The primary problem with GM's Diesel engines of the 1970s was due in large part to poor fuel quality (diesel fuel was notoriously filthy and contaminated with water in the late 1970's), which caused corrosion in the fuel injection pump.
Overall, the main ingredients of disaster that affected this engine lie in: 1) A poorly designed fuel system, which was fostered by a desire to insulate the consumer from the unpleasant aspects of Diesel ownership.

The difference is with a larger engine you have more power available if needed, while the small block v8 might pull, it will not have any power left over for emergencies, steep hills, high winds, etc...
My own opinion Ford makes a good truck but their diesel engine is too complicated and that leaves more ways for things to break, the v10 is reliable and cheap at the moment.
Gm's are comfortable but less stable towing than other's I have had, the 8.1 bigblock or DMAX engine's pull well, the 6.0 small block is a gas hog and under powered for the amount of gas it burns, mine averaged 6-7mpg depending on conditions.

Tim, the engine wouldn't have had such a bad rap (really) if GM had gotten somethings straight with their employees and customers.
To the general public after this experience, the 350 diesel was not a good engine to buy, and from what I've seen, the vast majority of them decided that, because of this, EVERY diesel was a bad choice.
Regardless of my personal feelings, I'm not trying to dispute what either of you are saying...I'm just saying that, to a member of "the general public", the 350 diesel placed a stigma that all diesels are bad, and that we are just now beginning to try and shake that off.
