While many acts in the continuing electro-funk revival of the late '90s hid behind aliases and updated the sound considerably, Ed Upton's DMX Krew made few concessions -- for better or worse -- to music or graphic technology developed later than 1985.
Turned on to electro in 1983 after buying a Kraftwerk seven-inch as a teenager, Upton began recording as DMX Krew in the mid-'90s, with his first album The Sound of the Street appearing in 1996 on Rephlex Records.

DMX Krew also indulges in the cheapest and cheesiest of '80s electro wankery with female-voiced tracks, รก la Stacy Q, Vanity 6, or Klymaxx, on songs like "Release My Dub." This record is quite a humorous survey of the embarrassing shortcomings of electronic pop music.

While many acts in the continuing electro-funk revival of the late '90s hid behind aliases and updated the sound considerably, Ed Upton's DMX Krew made few concessions - for better or worse - to music or graphic technology developed later than 1985.
Tracks like "Rock to the Beat," "Move My Body" and "Dance to the Beat" were rough but effective pastiches of spare street-level electro from the glory days, while the high-profile status of Rephlex (the label founded by Aphex Twin) guaranteed Upton a degree of exposure.
Rephlex's commitment to electro (as witnessed by its retrospective of electro-bass pioneers Dynamix II) resulted in several additional DMX Krew albums, including 1997's "Ffressshh!" and the following year's "Nu Romantix".

The second disc is a veritable delight for fans of DMX's earlier work, as it gathers greatest hits of DMX's productions on Rephlex, covering every phase of his ever evolving career from the Giorgio Moroder-inspired "17 Ways to Break My Heart" to the electro-heavy "Denki No Merodi" and back again.
The only glaring omission preventing this from being a definitive look at Ed Upton's career would be "I Can't Forget" from the U.S. Spectral Sound imprint.
Omissions aside, this is probably the best starting point to begin exploring his long and winding catalog, and is probably the most thorough survey of his finest moments ever committed to CD.

First disc first, with the likes of 'Tonight', 'The Pleasure Zone' and 'Maximillian' making welcome reappearances it's no wonder why the originals were snapped up so quick a while back.
Taking an 80's sound then mixing in a healthy twist of Rephlex love has always stood Ed DMX in good stead, with the 'Wave Function' series stretching this remit into new territories.
Whilst this could so easily have resulted in a nostalgic bout of electro tail-chasing, songs such as 'When The Going Get Weird' positively throb with barely contained disco goodness that makes sure not to bypass the brain as it gets intimate with your feet.
