The new standard, known officially as "Entertainment Technology — USITT DMX512–A — Asynchronous Serial Digital Data Transmission Standard for Controlling Lighting Equipment and Accessories", was approved by ANSI in November, 2004.
DMX was originally intended for use in linking controllers and dimmers of differing manufacturers, a protocol to be used as a last choice after trying other, more proprietary methods.
A new revision of the DMX512 standard, called DMX512A, was released in 2004 and lays the foundation for the RDM (Remote Device Management) protocol which will add diagnostic feedback from the fixtures to the controller and extend the DMX512A standard to encompass bidirectional communication between the lighting controller and lighting fixtures.

There is generally much excitement among the groups as the various new standards are coming close to completion.
DMX512A (BSR E1.11), the much-needed revision of the DMX standard, whilst being virtually ready for publication, did suffer a setback during the proceedings, caused by debate over the definition of the electrical connections.
The cabling standard E1.27 - originally part of DMX512A but removed to speed its publication - is nearly ready for public review, the main stumbling block being the definition of 'portable cables'.

Conversely if a new version has any incompatibility at all, then a new protocol name must be assigned.
The first two are fully interoperable at all software layers but not at the physical layer (different MAB requirements).
DMX512A is intended to be backward compatible but is not fully interoperable at the software layer with earlier versions because it includes packet definitions for a number of alternate start codes which must therefore be considered part of the standard.

Although the DMX512A specification insists that all DMX receivers MUST use the 5pin XLR connector many systems still use a 3pin XLR system so I have included a wiring diagram for XLR3 terminators as well.
As previously mentioned, the DMX512A specification permits up to 32 unit loads to be daisy-chained together on a single line providing the cable is correctly terminated.
To extend a DMX universe to more than 32 receivers use an opto-isolated buffer/distibution amplifier with multiple outputs.

This diagnostic instrument allows the functions (and history) of a fixture to be monitored and checked from anywhere in a venue.
Offering bi-directional communication with the fixtures which talk back to the device over a normal DMX cable, when inserted into the DMX512A chain, the DR-1 will replicate all functions and information, which until now were accessed only via a fixture's onboard display panel.
A single DR-1, for instance, will allow the operator to access as many as 250 fixtures, allowing him or her to alter the fixture's DMX address, turn the lamp on or off.

During the development of Colour-Tramp, which currently controls up to 20 DMX universes (10,240 channels), Artistic Licence realized that actually getting the channel allocations correct for such a complex system was a significant problem.
To this end they have developed the Visual-Patch system which uses a video camera, in conjunction with RDM (Remoted Device Management, the bi-directional addition to the DMX512A protocol), to switch on each device in turn, and map its address into the video image.
Such systems will have to remain low resolution for quite a while, as to achieve even a standard definition (640 x 480) display with its nearly 1 million sub pixels (307,200 each of red, green and blue), would require a processor pumping out 1,800 universes of DMX512.

The W-DMX signal jumps about every millisecond between these 83 frequencies, avoiding channels that are heavily interfered.
If you are using a DMX512A or a RDM network you can still use 512 receivers.

Up to 8192 receivers can be controlled form one system, and there are four differing types of transmitter - the differences being primarily in the quantity of DMX universes that can be controlled: 1, 4, 8 or up to 16 universes (8192 channels) of DMX can be deployed.

Q: What is Remote Device Management (RDM) and is it in the forthcoming DMX512A Standard?
A: Remote Device Management will be a standard that allows devices to communicate bi-directionally over a DMX physical interface.
This is not to be confused with the DMX512A (E1.11) Standard, which does comment on bi-directional data, but only with reference to the data type and wiring configurations.

You may need 3 - 5 pin adaptors with and without pin 4 and 5 continuity.
As I understand it the DMX512A standard specifies pins 4+5 as a second data link as Jivemaster and others have said, but RDM (when it finally lands properly) will be able to work half duplex down a single pair (ie pins 2+3) and pins 4+5 will allow full duplex between the desk and the receiver.
Actually the DMX/1990 standard documents their use as "optional second Data link Complement (Data 2 -)" and optional second Data link True (Data 2 +)"  Therefore Avo would be within the standard, however I dont know about CP/pulsar
