Due to rsync problems between the sorbs and dnsbl databases, we have dropped sorbs from t1.dnsbl.net.au.
The result is a large dnsbl zone with 1.8 million entries (and climbing daily), resulting in a very low rate of false positives.
There are so many DNSBL links and resources, they needed their own LINKS page.

DNSBL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A DNSBL is a means by which an Internet site may publish a list of IP addresses, that some people may want to avoid, in a format which can be easily queried by computer programs on the Internet.
The first DNSBL was the Real-time Blackhole List (RBL), created in 1997 by Paul Vixie and Dave Rand as part of the Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS).
To operate a DNSBL requires three things: a domain to host it under, a nameserver for that domain, and a list of addresses to publish.

DNSBL: The IP, sender and recipient whitelists and fllists can be imported and exported to and from various text formats, including CSV which can be imported by Microsoft® Excel®.
DNSBL: Spam is often sent with fake sender email address that does not exist to recipients that are no longer valid, which results in tons of NDR's filling up the mail queue.
DNSBL: While the whitelists can be used to exclude hosts, senders or local mailboxes from filtering, the same type of fllists help you reject messages from specific hosts or IP ranges, senders (domains) or local mailboxes.

Understanding DNSBL, SMTP blacklist and Bayesian anti-spam filtering in 602LAN SUITE - Software602
The first two, DNSBL and SMTP fllist, work by rejecting connections via a list of addresses linked to spamming.
DNSBL is a method of blocking connections to your server by looking up the remote connection on a list of known spammers or net blocks.
An advantage of DNSBL is it blocks the actual connection from known spammers; it can save you bandwidth as well as CPU time and storage space to process and store the message.

 Spamhaus - Understanding DNSBL Filtering
A DNSBL (commonly known as a 'Blocklist") is a database that is queried in realtime by Internet mail servers for the purpose of obtaining an opinion on the origin of incoming email.
DNSBLs are used by the Receiver's private mail server and from within the Receiver's private network.
In effect the receiving mail server asks the Spamhaus DNSBL "Does this Sender's IP Address exist on the Spamhaus database?", the Spamhaus DNSBL simply responds with a "Yes" if present or, if not present does not respond at all (no response means "we have no opinion on that IP Address").

SORBS (Spam and Open-Relay Blocking System)
The SORBS DNSBL was born in November 2002.
On January 6, 2003, the SORBS DNSBL was officially launched to the public.
Since those initial 78,000 proxies, the SORBS DNSBL has grown to an astounding 3 million listed hosts (that's less than 0.07% of the possible addresses on the internet - statistics correct as of June 2004).

This effort began out of frustration with the amount of spam coming into our networks and with the lack of options for an existing dnsbl with policies and stability we could live with.
NJABL.ORG maintains a list of known and potential spam sources (open relays, open proxies, open form to mail HTTP gateways, dynamic IP pools, and direct spammers) for the purpose of being able to tag or refuse email and prevent at least some spam.
Our goal is to provide a stable and effective dnsbl with clearly stated and strictly adhered to criteria for listing.

What is DNSBL? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
DNSBLs are used to publish IP addresses associated with e-mail spam and spamming.
An address found in a DNSBL may be directly associated with spam, or may have made the list due to Web server vulnerabilities that can be used by spammers.
There are many DNSBLs available, each published and maintained by different individuals and organizations.

WhiteList and Passed counts are for each message that is transported to the application level (mail daemon) on a repeating basis.
Once an IP is entered into the tarpit, it is not possible for it to reach the application level and be counted since the connection to that host is blocked at the IP socket transport level.
Once the IP address has been added to the SpamCannibal tarpit, it is no longer possible for the application layer to see or count connection attempts for a host.

DNSBLs that return multiple values often have multiple test addresses so that, for example, the entry for 127.0.0.5 returns a 127.0.0.5 A record and corresponding TXT record.
DNSBL clients are most often mail servers or spam filters called from mail servers.
Conversely, if a DNSBL manager removes all of the entries (which has also happened), systems that depend on the DNSBL will find that their filtering doesn't work as they want it to.

 SRUTI '06 Abstract
This paper studies the prevalence of DNSBL reconnaissance observed at a mirror of a well-known fllist for a 45-day period, identifies the means by which botmasters are performing reconnaissance, and suggests the possibility of using counter-intelligence to discover likely bots.
We initially expected that most DNSBL lookups would be third-party lookups, as described in Section 2.2.1, and that we would be able to validate the queried nodes as being known bots.
DNSBL queries issued by mail servers are often performed by directly querying the DNSBL, rather than relying on a local resolver.

DNS Blacklists Laced with Personal Agendas   (Site not responding. Last check: )
DNSBL's are databases of servers and networks which can help spam filters figure out if a sender is a likely spam source.
When a DNSBL is sent the address of a server or network, it responds with an IP address that indicates if it's included on the list of likely spammers.
Users and system administrators should be aware of what anti-spam fllists their software relies on, and generally avoid trusting any individual DNSBL to be the final decision if an email is spam or not.

The IP address is believed by the DNSBL maintainer to be in a block of addresses assigned at some level to an ISP who is not acting to disconnect spammers from their network.

Most mail servers nowadays have DNSBL support (either built in, or through use of a plug-in) that allows a mail server administrator to block mail from sites listed on a specific DNSBL.

DNSBL stands for "Domain Name Service-delivered Blocking List" (or "DNS-delivered Blackhole List") and refers to the delivery mechanism more than the content of the list itself; the list data is queried using the standard DNS protocol usually used for turning hostnames into I.P. addresses.
To query a DNSBL list for a certain I.P. address, you reverse the address, prepend it to the zone name, and make a DNS query for the result.
By having your mailserver check the source of mail against a DNSBL service, the hope is that mail from spam-friendly providers can be rejected (since it's probably spam), while other email is allowed to pass unmolested.
