Topic: DOC (computing)

DOC (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, DOC or doc (short for 'document') is a common file extension, traditionally used for documentation in plain-text format, particularly of programs or computer hardware, on a wide range of operating systems.
During the 1980s, WordPerfect used DOC as the extension of their proprietary format.
On the Palm OS, DOC is shorthand for PalmDoc, a completely unrelated format used to encode text files such as ebooks.

Loughborough University Computing Services - Students
There are computing laboratories (www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/labs/) located all over the campus, including the Library, with hundreds of seats available 24 hours per day (except when actually being used for teaching).
Students who stay in Hall and have their own computer can access the University's network and the Internet, and many University computer facilities at high speeds, using the HallNet service (www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/hallnet/).
Usernames (also known as user ids) and passwords, which are needed to access computer systems, are distributed via departments to new taught course students at the beginning of the academic year.

The fastest computer in the world today is in Japan not the U.S., and several federal agencies are in the process of reformulating their high-performance computing programs, in part, in response to the challenge posed by Japan.
And while the computing industry doesn't look much like it did in the early '80s—revolutions often leave bodies in their wake—U.S. computing capability has continued to advance, and we often hear that today's desktop computers have the power that was once limited to the highest-end models.
High-performance computing is crossing the boundary between the lab and the rest of society and is on the road to becoming a ubiquitous and conventional part of the IT infrastructure.

Center for Distributed Object Computing, University of California, Irvine
For the Internet to become pervasive, access devices must become very cheap, their use must be intuitive, and distributed computing middleware must do most of the ``thinking'' for the users.
This evolution will turn the current computing model inside out -- clients will become very thin, the intelligence will reside in the network, and most applications will be network-centric.
As network providers broaden their bandwidth and service offerings, flexibility becomes increasingly more important, since pricing must be sensitive to both performance and ``class of service'' if it is to reach the widest possible market.

Dwelling with computers means that they have their place, and we ours, and we co-exist comfortably.
Unfortunately, our existing metaphors for computers (and nature, for that matter) are inadequate to describe the "dwelling" relationship.
Similarly, the imbedded computers of 2005 will bring other worlds to us in new ways-- sometimes in ways so unobtrusive we will not even notice our increased ability for informed action.

Distributed Object Computing Security - '99
The available security technologies for any one DOC model are varying combinations of: immature, unproven, poorly understood, poorly integrated, poorly implemented and difficult to manage - but absolutely critical to the success of the enterprise subsystems that use that model.
Compounding this problem with each individual DOC technology is the fact that some aspects of the security technologies of each model are incompatible with those of the others.
Building on the success of two previous DOCsec (Distributed Object Computing Security) Workshops, the OMG and the NSA are sponsoring this Third Workshop on Distributed Object Computing Security to bring the developers of DOCsec Specifications and Standards, Products and Systems together to share knowledge, experiences, plans and requirements.
