  DOHC, SOHC, and Pushrod Engines
You can actuate four valves per cylinder (or three, like Mercedes-Benz) with one camshaft by using rocker arms to open one set or both, depends on how you want to do it.
As for DOHC, again, there is an advantage in weight, at an extra cost, both financially and in complexity.
Remember, Roger Penske's car won the Indy 500 a few years ago with a pushrod engine, everybody else had DOHC.

  Britain.tv Wikipedia - DOHC
Not all DOHC engines are multivalve engines — DOHC was common in two valve per cylinder heads for decades before multivalve heads appeared, however today DOHC is synonymous with multivalve heads, since almost all DOHC engines have between three and five valves per cylinder.
The first DOHC engines were two valve per cylinder designs from companies like Fiat (1912), Peugeot (1913), Alfa Romeo (6C- 1925, 512 - 1940), Maserati (Tipo 26, 1926), and Bugatti (Type 51, 1931).
When DOHC technology was introduced in mainstream vehicles, it was common for the technology to be heavily advertised.

For each pair of valves, notice that there are three cam lobes: two cam lobes on the outside, and one cam lobe in the middle.
DOHC VTEC is the most ambitious of all VTEC varieties in terms of specific output (except for the up coming VTEC-i).
DOHC VTEC technology is currently used in the 160HP Civic Si, 170HP Integra GS-R, 195HP Integra Type-R, 200HP Prelude base/Type-SH, 240HP S2000 and the venerable 290HP Acura NSX.

DOHC - WOI Encyclopedia Italia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A double overhead cam (also called a dual overhead cam, DOHC, or "twincam") engine is a type of internal combustion engine where the camshafts that operate the intake and exhaust valves are mounted above the cylinders, and where there are separate camshafts for inlet and exhaust valves.
Double camshafts are not required in order to have multiple inlet or exhaust valves, but are necessary for more than 2 valves that are directly actuated (though still usually via tappets).
The first DOHC engines were 2-valve designs from companies like Fiat (1912), Peugeot (1913), Alfa Romeo (6C, 1925), Maserati (Tipo 26, 1926), and Bugatti (Type 51, 1931).

DOHC engines have two centers because of the use of two cams.

OHV, OHC, SOHC and DOHC (twin cam) engine - Automotive illustrated glossary
Downsides: it's difficult to precisely control the valve timing at high rpm due to higher inertia caused by larger amount of valve train components (lifter-pushrod-rocker arm).
Since it's possible to install multiple valves per cylinder and place intake valves on the opposite side from exhaust vales, DOHC engine can "breath" better meaning that it can produce more horsepowers with smaller engine volume.
Compare: The 3.5-liter V6 DOHC engine of 2003 Nissan Pathfinder has 240 h.p, similar to 245 h.p of the 5.9-liter V8 OHV engine of 2003 Dodge Durango.

dohc vs sohc - Car Forums and Automotive Chat   (Site not responding. Last check: )
10-12-2004, 02:32 PM The dohc was prone to head gaskets blowing, I have driven cars with both and the dohc had a much torquier feel to it (but that could also have been that the dohc'ed Impreza I had was a coupe while the sohc'ed is a sedan.).
The advantages of the DOHC was that it would have been a better engine to turbo if it was running a MAP system...
So in conclusion, the census is that the dohc is a more powerful setup (potentially) with turbo than the sohc, and the sohc is the more fuel economic and safe version to go with.

RE: DOHC vs SOHC which better why? (NMC)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
You can tune a DOHC engine to give more torque at lower RPM and you can have a 4-valve design with a SOHC.
The some of the advantages of DOHC over SOHC are: More flexibility in designing the combustion chamber, because you have more flexibility to change the valve angles and spacing in the design and to have the valves directly actuated by the cams.
DOHC and >multivalve heads will allow more horsepower from a >given engine displacement, but you end up with a peaky >engine that doesn't like to run slow.

For 1991-1992 DOHC models the CAS and TDCS are both in the same housing located on the rear end of the left-bank intake camshaft.
For our DOHC 6G72-engined Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth cars the engine control unit provides both dwell control (to generate sufficient energy) and timing control (crankshaft and camshaft position information goes directly to the ECU), relieving the power transistor unit (PTU) of these tasks.

SOHC vs DOHC Valvetrains   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Two cams per cylinder head means that a DOHC V engine has 4 camshafts because it has 2 banks of cylinder heads.
DOHC engines also allows the spark plug to be placed right in the middle of the combustion chamber.
If you were to put high-profile cams in your DOHC engine, the cam lobe profile can also be more optimized than a SOHC engine because you can play around with the lobe shape easier with separate camshafts for the intake and exhaust valves.

 TeamPALIO: DOHC, SOHC Nedir ?
SOHC ile DOHC arasındaki fark birincisinin iki supaplı ve ikincisinin de genelde 4 supaplı olmasıdır.
The first DOHC engines were 2-valve designs from companies like Fiat (1912), Peugeot (1913), Alfa Romeo (6C- 1925, 512 - 1940), Maserati (Tipo 26, 1926), and Bugatti (Type 51, 1931).
Most early mainstream DOHCs were 4-cylinder engines as well: Ford's first DOHC motor was the Lotus-reworked Kent (1962), and General Motors' first was the 1975 Cosworth-tweaked 2300, though by comparison, Toyota debuted two production DOHC engines in 1967: the inline-4 9R engine (Corona 1600GT) and the Yamaha-designed straight-6 3M engine (2000GT).

Other benefits of DOHC would be making it easier to implement variable valve timing technologies (which I will cover in another blog post) and also you can tweak it better with adjustable cam pulleys.
We can see that torque at low RPMs are about the same for both engines, but at higher speeds the 2-valve per cylinder engine has reached it’s peak and has to switch to the next gear while the twincam 4 valve per cylinder engine continues making more power at the top-end of the powerband.
DOHC essentially allows you to tune on what can look like a bell curve or a straight line (plotting power generated at whatever rpm interval) where SOHC can only allow you to tune on what would look like a straight line.
