Dosshell - Graphic user interface and screen shot.
Another style or type of GUI is the Dosshell that is included with the MS-DOS 5.0 and MS-DOS 6.2 install version.
Shown below is a screen capture of the Dosshell GUI and the 6 files that are required.
The default screen is divided into two windows with a directory tree (a list of files) in the top window and a list of programs available through the Shell in a lower window.

Microsuck Forums - Can They Do Anything On Their Own?
DosShell was basically a file manager (and a crappy one at that) that would also allow you to execute programs from it and when the program closed you came back to dosshell.
I used to use a menuing system called HDM (Hard Disk Menu) that blew DosShell away, and then after HDM came out I think another one called "ArcMenu" came out which was also very good and maybe a little easier to add apps.
And here I was under the impression that they had come up with dosshell on their own.

[Abandoneer] the classics will not be lost
DOSShell is a simple and effective front-end for the acclaimed DOSBox application.
The creation of DOSBox widely changed the way old DOS games were played in modern computers, offering an almost certain alternative to run nearly all old games -- all while newer versions of Windows and the near disappearance of real DOS made it very difficult to enjoy old games to full extent.
But young new gamers are usually not familiar with DOS in the first place, and there's where DOSShell comes in.

This configuration is seutup for XT, PC,and 286 machines, it is also good on any machine with a small hard drive (20mb) since it only requires about 14mb of space.
DOSSHELL, configured to manage files & act as a application menu, allows viewing or running files by association (just double click the file).
NOTES: The DOSSHELL must be configured to match the video card in the computer.

DOSSHELL can be used (among other things) to rename/move (sub)directories or as a DOS mode "task switcher", kool features, otherwise not supported at the plain DOS prompt.
Note that not all DOSSHELL graphics resolutions may be available on your computer, depending on the video modes supported by your video controller.
Note that DOSSHELL is not as intuitive as Windows Explorer (Win9x users) or File Manager (Win3x users), and won't let you just point/browse to the default registered associated executable for a particular file extension.

DOS Shell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "mem" command executed before running dosshell and from within dosshell shows that only 7 KB were used.
It seems that just like Norton Commander, DOSSHELL was composed of a "resident" part and of a "transient" part, which was removed from memory during the execution of other programs.
It could only switch between programs running in memory, and even then the system would still take a significant performance hit.

Hi Fi Writer - Stephen Dawson - Letter on DOSSHELL's Memory Requirements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In fact DOSSHELL normally swaps most of itself out of memory when running programs, leaving a tiny restart segment of only 2.2 Kb.
On my system without running DOSSHELL I have 618.2 Kb of conventional memory for running programs, with DOSSHELL I have 612.8 Kb.
Still, this isn't bad when you think of all the work the task swapper has to do, monitoring all keystrokes for the hotkeys that invoke it, copying all of conventional memory's contents to a temporary disk file and so on.

First, from what I understand, DOSShell from a MS-DOS 5.0 disk should be legally available to us with MS-DOS 5.0 on our HPLX Palmtops, so if I am incorrect someone let me know.
Okay, DOSShell is installed in a directory (that you probably want to include in the path).
Unfortunately, DOSShell cannot do many of the great things Software Carousel can do, such as run multiple System Managers, automatically switch to a task that's running a PIM appliction you desire, and I'm sure some other things as well.
