RFC 4129 (rfc4129) - Digital Private Network Signaling System (DPNSS)/Digi
DPNSS 1, specified in ND1301:2001/03 (formerly BTNR 188), is used to interconnect Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) in a private network.
DPNSS channel - Time slots 1 to 15 and 17 to 31 on a 2048 kbits/s interface or Time slots 1 to 23 on a 1544 kbits/s interface are termed as DPNSS channels.
DPNSS extends facilities that are normally only available between extensions on a single PBX to all extensions on PBXs that are connected in a private network.

PQM Consultants - Digital Private Network Signalling System (DPNSS)
DPNSS was developed before ISDN was fully defined and before a basic QSIG definition was available, but its facilities were needed by private network customers who wished to make use of digital networks as soon as possible.
DPNSS is rich in standardised supplementary services and its information flows have been used as the basis of work on the QSIG protocols.
DPNSS is defined in four documents that are available to any manufacturer, and many manufacturers have taken the opportunity to develop interfaces that conform to this open standard.

There are configurations in which DPNSS encoded signaling information needs to be transported between SIP [3] entities as part of the payload of SIP messages, where the preservation of DPNSS data is necessary for the proper operation of DPNSS based, private network features.
DPNSS call signalling and end-to-end signalling messages' semantic is similar to that of SIP - there by rendering the SIP-T [12] architecture as an appropriate mechanism of DPNSS message object carriage in SIP.
Though the DPNSS protocol is 'specification-wise' perfectly (backward/forward) compatible with the different issue versions, the introduction of an explict version parameter would help in better 'protocol de-bugging', whilst interconnecting PBXs compliant to different issues of ND1301:2001/03 [2] or BTNR [11].

DPNSS 1 is a common-channel signaling system and is primarily intended for use between PBXs in private networks via time-slot 16 of 2.048 Mbit/s digital transmission system.
From the perspective of this MIB, the DPNSS Layer 2 and DPNSS Layer 3 is modeled as a single logical interface (ifEntry) to represent the DPNSS signaling channel as a whole.
The rationale for this approach is based on the guidelines proposed in the interfaces MIB [16] which recommends that a group of related interfaces be treated as a single interface with one entry in the ifTable.

 Overview of DPNSS Features
For a Voice Mail system connected to a DPNSS PBX to light the MWI indicator on an IP phone connected to Cisco CallManager, the DPNSS MWI parameter is mapped to a H.323 call with the MWI flag set to MWI-ON or MWI-OFF for the appropriate extension connected to Cisco CallManager.
DPNSS PBX to Cisco CallManager: The Cisco EGW 2200 interrogates, on behalf of the DPNSS PBX, the appropriate extension on Cisco CallManager and informs the DPNSS PBX when the Cisco CallManager extension returns to on-hook after the next use.
Once the DPNSS end-user station is returned to on-hook after the next use, the Cisco EGW 2200 informs the Cisco CallManager end-user via XML-based visual indication or differentiated ring pattern.

 Overview of DPNSS
DPNSS expands the facilities normally only available between extensions on a single PBX to all extensions on PBXs that are connected together in a private network.
DPNSS was originally derived from British Telecom's Digital Access Signaling System I (DASS I), and enhanced where necessary to meet private network requirements.
The DPNSS PBX interfaces with the IP network by using one of the supported access routers (Cisco 2600, Cisco 3600 or Cisco 3700 class access routers).

It is used by the DPNSS function library to interact with the board.

DPNSS over IP / DPNSS to IP services for corporates
DPNSS over IP The 8el Digital Private Networking Signaling System (DPNSS) to IP gateway provides organisations with a cost efficient solution allowing DPNSS voice and data to be routed down a single ATM connection, without compromising on the quality or functionality of the voice or data traffic.
The solution will retain support for all DPNSS voice supplementary services as if still connected in a TDM environment, this includes route optimisation, centralised operator and support of existing voice mail systems.
Customers can rationalise their DPNSS ports (and associated maintenance costs) because all of the traffic is routed through the Gateway.

The TAC is a code that is sent in the DPNSS signalling information carried with the dialled number and is used to determine if a call can be established using a particular Trunk Group at the given time.
TACs are associated with the call initiator (the telephone extension for example) on a DPNSS PABX and are valid throughout the private DPNSS network.
In DPNSS switching nodes, time is divided into bands common to all days of the week.

ISDN OVERVIEW   (Site not responding. Last check: )
If one of the involved manufacturers develops a new facility which is considered to be of general interest and practical use it will be included as a standard and controlled function in the DPNSS definition for all parties to use and draw upon.
Unlike DPNSS it is a regulated standard, but like DPNSS the feature list is optional after the basic of call set up and handling have been implemented, so the interoperation of any two switches will be dependant upon the common features of the implementations of the connected telephone systems.
Whilst there are a number of existing DPNSS connected networks in operation which will expand and keep up a demand for DPNSS, the Q-Sig protocol will eventually supersede it as new networks adopt it as their communications standard in coming years.

The trouble is that because DPNSS isn’t a standard, and it’s pretty UK-specific, some of the larger VoIP/IPT manufacturers don’t support it.
However, it doesn’t always support all the features that DPNSS does and you may have to buy a new card (or software) for your PBX to support it.
Which has led to the development of DPNSS gateways by vendors purely to fill the gap.
