DPOF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DPOF (Digital Print Order format) is a format which allows the user of a digicam to define which captured images on the storage card are to be printed, together with information on the number of copies or other image information.
DPOF usually consists of a set of text files in a special directory on the storage card.
This option can be accessed through one of the menu modes on the camera.

The DPOF records the information for the specific images and number of each image that users want to print in a broadly recognized format.
Adoption of the DPOF in digital cameras, photofinishing services, and home printers will give users several advantages, thereby spurring additional interest in digital capture and growing use of digitized pictures.

When the number of prints is set, an image file in which at least one frame is designated for printing is determined to have a read-only file property in order to prevent the image file from being erased against the designation for printing.
In particular, a file (which is called a DPOF file but will hereafter be referred to as a printing information file) for containing the printing information is written in a text file format, and is recorded in the recording medium independently of the image file.
According to the DPOF (digital print order format) standard, the digital camera 10 records the image data of each frame photographed by the CCD as an image file and records printing information relating to each frame image as a printing information file (a DPOF file).

A user can create a DPOF file that says "print this picture 4 times" and then send both the image and DPOF file to a print bureau or to a DPOF printer.
The DPOF file is read to see what the user wants done with the image file.
DPOF is currently still new and untried; interestingly, there is no agreed way to handle the DPOF file after printing; it might be deleted, or it might be marked in some way.

Many of the possibilities of DPOF (particularly 1.10) specification are provided speculatively for future systems and services.
The DPOF format will record information allowing images captured by digital cameras to be automatically printed through photofinishing print services or home printers, functioning as a kind of digital "order envelope." Users of digital cameras will be able to select the photos they want printed directly in the camera without using a computer.
The DPOF file is written to the camera's removable media (such as CompactFlash™, SmartMedia™, and floppy disk) and this information is read by home printers, photofinishing services and software applications.

The Stylus Photo 785EPX is a high-quality color inkjet printer targeted for the new generation of digital photographers who want to control every aspect of their digital print production -- from capture to output -- with minimum technical knowledge and great results.
The 785EPX incorporates the industry standard Digital Print Order Format (DPOF), which reads printing instructions right off the memory card, and Epson's new PRINT Image Matching technology, a process that enables it to print perfectly matched color images (when made from PRINT-enabled cameras), without the need for computer processing or image editing software.
It does this by reading detailed printing parameters (gamma level, color balance, highlights and shadows, etc.) written to the image file, and applying this information to produce optimum print quality.
