		Stevenson wrote the Passacaglia on DSCH between 1960 and 1962, presenting the whole 191 page score to Shostakovich at the Edinburgh Festival in August of the latter year.
		The opening 'sonata' pounds the DSCH theme in the bass, clipping the last note in a commanding gesture of purposeful optimism.
		The crescendo of DSCH against this auric nightmare is as explosive as anything in Shostakovich's 7th or 8th symphonies.

		What I think the problem is, is that because DSCH has written a lot more serious/deep music than SP, people just get the opinion that DSCH was the better composer.
		This is especially caught my attention in DSCH 2nd piano concerto.

		DSCH: DSCH is a short form that many posters use for Shostakovich's name.
		The most spectacular (and first major) use of the DSCH motif is in the 10th Symphony.
		The most striking scene in the movie, which has stayed with me to this day, was the approach to the climactic scene, a long vertical tracking shot up a construction crane elevator, with the ostinato from the third movement pounding away in the background.

		But when it came time to write my final thesis for my music theory classes I chose Dmitri Shostikovich's Quartet Number 8 as my topic.
		Perhaps it was because it reminded me of Der Kunst Der Fugue because it featured another musical signature, this time DSCH (again, in German the note E is pronounced "Es", and the note H is a C#) or, Dmitri SCHostakowitsch -- the German spelling of his name.
		Schostakovich, a Russian composer continually haunted by the Communist Party that ruled his country at the time and all but ashamed of his nationality and certainly oppressed by it, had meant Quartet No. 8 to be a suicide note.
