Topic: DSDL

  ISO DSDL Overview
Standing for "Document Schema Definition Languages", DSDL is a recognition that the validation of XML documents is a subject too wide and complex to be covered by a single language.
DSDL can be seen as a framework and set of languages to check the quality of XML documents and this issue appears to be crucial for any XML based application.
DSDL Part 9 is for these people who would like to rely on years of usage of DTDs without loosing all of the goodies of newer schema languages.

DSDL’s collection efficiency [Collections/(Billings+Opening Debtors)] in lease declined from 93.4% in 1996-97 to 91.3% in 1997-98 (due to a few delinquent accounts) while in hire purchase it increased from 96.5% in 1996-97 to 99.6% in 1997-98 (following collection of entire overdues of the previous year).
DSDL recognises penal interest on delayed lease and hire purchase instalment receipts on an accrual basis, which has resulted in overstatement of income in 1997-98.
DSDL is likely to report higher profits in 1998-99 due to increase in lease and hire purchase income.

 XML.com: DSDL Examined
While researching this week's article, I was surprised to note that while DSDL has been referred to for some time in several forums, including XML-DEV and this column, there isn't much published information about the project, which is actually in a very embryonic stage.
DSDL, as its home page notes, aims to "create a framework within which multiple validation tasks of different types can be applied to an XML document in order to achieve more complete validation results than just the application of a single technology".
DSDL will provide a framework for mixing together multiple schema languages, which allows the user to avoid choosing a single language and to benefit from the strengths of several languages.

 XML.com: DSDL Interoperability Framework
DSDL ("Document Schema Definition Languages") is a project of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 (chair, Jim Mason) Working Group 1 (chair, Charles Goldfarb).
DSDL is necessary because other XML schema languages (primarily W3C XML Schema) do not meet the needs of "document heads", and document validation is too complex to be done using a single language.
The chief design principle of DSDL is to split the issue of describing and validating documents into simpler issues: grammar based validation, rule based validation, content selection, datatypes, and so on.

 Appendix A. DSDL
DSDL (Document Schema Definition Languages) recognizes that the validation of XML documents is a subject too wide and complex to be covered by a single language.
The goal of DSDL is to provide a means to fill out these gaps and to cover the whole domain of document validation.
DSDL can be seen as a framework and set of languages that checks the quality of XML documents, a crucial issue for any XML based application.

I was the first project chairman of DSDL and only stepped down from that role at the December meeting that just happened due to health concerns.
DSDL *will* accommodate the use of W3C Schema when that is important to someone's validation requirements.
DSDL has no purview to make any part of W3C Schema an ISO standard, but there are no restrictions to referring to it or accommodating the use of it in the technologies that are developed.

DSDL members in attendance reassured him that exclusion is not the intention, and expressed a willingness to address concerns about the openness of the project.

The Cover Pages: Rick Jelliffe on NRL and DSDL (Defaults, PSVI)
The general ISO DSDL framework is expected to provide various kinds of transformation operations, which should cope with Chris' request.
The general reason for this is a belief (shared by most of the instigators of the inidividual schema languages that are being standardized in ISO DSDL) that document transformation (such as adding defaults) and validation are different things and should be disentangled.
The problem with defaults values as part of schema languages is that they mean that in order to be sure of the infoset of a document, you have to be sure that the document has been validated.

Document Schema Definition Languages (DSDL) is a project of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC34/WG1 working group chaired by Charles Goldfarb.
This stage is similar to a W3C "Proposed Recommendation" and the specification should be approved as a final ISO standard within a period of two months.
DSDL has also advanced the definition of the remaining parts and several of them should lead to publications during the next meeting at XML Europe 2003.

DSDL is chaired by Martin Bryan and its editors include James Clark, Murata Makoto, Rick Jelliffe, Martin Bryan, Diederik Gerth van Wijk, Ken Holman and myself).

Even though a DSDL charge may not be a serious criminal charge, the charge itself can be a very stressful ordeal, let alone a conviction.

The purpose of DSDL is to coordinate the development of common databases within the Division and facilitate the sharing of spatial data, techniques, and programs with other USGS offices across the wide area network.
Rather than seek to create a single centralized repository of spatial data, DSDL is designed with the recognition that the most valuable holdings of data and techniques are distributed in many offices across the country.
An important advantage of DSDL's distributed repository architecture is that custody of specific data sets will be explicitly assigned, thereby delegating ownership and maintenance of the data and programs to the source of the data.

The DSDL Validation Candidate Selection Language (VCSL) is an "XML-based language for controlling selection of validation candidates.

The formal semantics of a DSDL is defined in terms of PacSoft's algebraic design language (ADL) [11][10].
This semantics gives the DSDL a computational interpretation in which the relations between the principal concepts of a design abstraction are formalized.
Each operator of the abstract syntax of a DSDL is given a computational interpretation by a semantic function.

XML and Web Service Glossary: DSDL (Document Schema Definition Languages)
DSDL is a framework under which several XML Schema Languages are combined.
The idea of DSDL is to modularize validation of XML documents, in the sense that for different aspects of validation, different XML Schema Languages can be used.
The reasoning behind this approach is that no single XML Schema Language can match all possible applicatio requirements, and rather than creating a very complex and hard to handle XML Schema Language, it makes more sense to create smaller, specialized XML Schema Languages, which are easier to learn, handle, and implement.

The DSDL naturally expresses the partitioning of data by content over the data storage.
This has the advantage that the search space of a query can be reduced if a predicate in the query refers to a column which is used to partition the data.
A partial DSDL specification, relating to our example partitioning (figure 4) discussed later, is shown in figure 6.

DSDL [ISO/IEC 19757] is a relatively new project under International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Committee, Joint Technical Committee 1, Subcommittee 34, Working Group 1.
Two kinds of integrated specifications are included: specifications for describing aspects of validity of a document, and rules for combining and packaging a collection of processes applicable to the task of validating a document.
This integration makes DSDL applicable to both business and publishing applications of structured information resources." Much of the DSDL work is expected to be conducted via email.
