  Будущее - за Ethernet DSLAM

DSLAM Market is Booming, Yet Highly Competitive
Alcatel continued to be the dominant vendor of DSLAMs in all regions, except for the Asia-Pacific region (where they were the 2nd -leading vendor).
The deployment of DSLAMs in remote locations is growing as service providers extend their DSL footprint to reach more subscribers.
Another key driver for remote DSLAMs is the deployment of VDSL in Multiple Tenant Units (MTUs) in countries such as Japan and Korea.

Light Reading - Video - Video Over IP - Telecom Report
The DSLAM is required to monitor the exchange of IGMP messages between the Layer 3 switch and the set-top boxes, a process called IGMP snooping.
DSLAMs with this type of advanced IGMP snooping capabilities have now eliminated the unnecessary processing overhead from the aggregation switch.
The DSLAM must be able to turn the multicast streams on and off very rapidly (in less than 100ms) to prevent the ADSL line from becoming flooded with multicast packets when the user changes channel.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: DSLAM   (Site not responding. Last check: )
DSLAM is not always located in the telco central office, but may also serve customers within a neighborhood Serving Area Interface (SAI) as part of a digital loop carrier.
Like voiceband modems of standard v.34 and later, it has the ability to probe the line and train itself to compensate for echoes and other impairments, in order to move data at the maximum rate the line allows and which is why DSL services have a longer range than balanced pair Ethernet.
DSLAMs are also used by hotels, lodges, golfing estates and residential neighbourhoods setting up their own private telephone exchange.

Multiservice Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM)
Next-generation DSLAM platforms will offer greater density and lower cost per port along with more diversity in services (such as voice gateways and virtual private networks) using multiple DSL transports such as ADSL, VDSL, HDSL, SHDSL and so on.
Typical DSLAM systems are ATM-based, with the primary role of aggregating multiple xDSLOs for uplink to the network.
The number of subscribers a DSLAM can handle is a key requirement, and supporting such high density per platform or card requires a range of interfaces and speeds.

What is DSLAM? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: Digital Suscriber Line Access Multiplexer
- A DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) is a network device, usually at a telephone company central office, that receives signals from multiple customer Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections and puts the signals on a high-speed backbone line using multiplexing techniques.
Depending on the product, DSLAM multiplexers connect DSL lines with some combination of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), frame relay, or Internet Protocol networks.
DSLAM enables a phone company to offer business or homes users the fastest phone line technology (DSL) with the fastest backbone network technology (ATM).

With interest and revenues from ADSL continuing to grow, carriers are continually on the hunt for new approaches to extend the reach of their networks to more customers.
In the case of a DSLAM, the term "line powered" applies where a relatively high voltage is fed over one or more copper wire pairs that terminate at the remote equipment, and the high voltage is down-converted and regulated to operate the remote electronics.
The OSP DSLAM provides the ADSL service towards the subscriber end of the network and bridges the connection to the central office (CO) via an upstream data path, usually referred to as the backhaul.

Why did you place the DSLAM at the cross-connect box rather than at the SLC (remote terminal)?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
There would need to be a way to connect the DSLAM pairs to the F1s, what the telco would call a "cross-connect field." In our SLC box we are told there isn't room for a cross-connect field.
In our case, since we are using one of the ports of the DSLAM as our connection to our T1 line, we want that port to be as fast as possible.
So if we were to put the DSLAM at (or near) the SLC box rather than at the crossbox, we would be adding some 7000 feet to each loop.

A DSLAM separates the voice-frequency signals from the high-speed data traffic and controls and routes digital subscriber line (xDSL) traffic between the subscriber's end-user equipment (router, modem, or network interface card [NIC]) and the network service provider's network.
Such DSLAMs often allow for full ATM switching, traffic management, and quality of service (QoS), in addition to the delivery of a full range of services.
The multiservice DSLAM can also be configured to add value in the form of routing and security functionality.
